TI Improves Performance with Transition Mode PFC Controller
7/11/2003 - Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) introduced a new high performance, transition mode power factor correction (PFC) controller with zero power detect and improved slew rate response - the UCC38051. The cost-effective controller provides increased functionality for off-line and DC/DC switch mode power supplies such as desktops, computer monitors, television sets, set-top boxes and other distributed power systems such as electronic ballasts.
TI's UCC38051 provides a low offset transconductance voltage amplifier for feedback error processing, a simple multiplier for generating a current command in sync with the input voltage, a current sense power width modulation (PWM) comparator with logic, and a totem-pole driver for driving an external FET.
The lower undervoltage lockout turn-on threshold of the UCC38051 allows the operation of the PFC device to be easily controlled by the downstream PWM controller in two-stage power converters. The controller provides typical source current as low as 180 mA for faster start-up operation and improved transient response when output is low at start-up or during transient conditions.
Available Today
Pin-compatible with many industry standard PFC devices, the UCC38051 controller is available now from TI and its authorized distributors to support the industrial temperature range of -40º C to 105º C or commercial temperature range of 0º C to 70º C. The device is offered in a space-saving, eight-pin small outline integrated circuit (SOIC) and plastic dual-in-line (PDIP) package. Suggested resale pricing starts at $0.65 each in quantities of 1,000.
