ARTiSAN Provides Real-time UML Tool for Omicron NanoTechnology

7/9/2003 - ARTiSAN Software Tools, a global leader for UML-based, real-time systems and software modeling tools, announced that Omicron NanoTechnology, the world's foremost developer of atomic-level surface analysis physical instruments, has selected Real-time Studio as tool of choice because of combined support for systems and software development.

"Omicron holds a holistic view of hardware and software design," stated Dr. Ulrich Körber, Manager for Electronics and Software Development, "which requires a UML tool to support not only the modeling of software, but also the design of complete integrated hardware/software systems embracing both proprietary embedded and PC-based entities. Real-time Studio was selected because it supports this holistic view of hardware/software co-design, and also because it allows the entire team to work on system models simultaneously via the tool's unique multi-user repository. The instruments that Omicron develops are controlled by complex control units, which must meet high performance and real-time scheduling requirements."

Alan Moore, ARTiSAN's VP of Product Strategy and Chairman of the OMG's Finalization Task Force for the UML Profile for Schedulability, Performance and Time, commented, "Omicron's holistic view of hardware/software co-development is becoming increasingly prevalent, as development teams seek effective system-wide approaches to achieve higher quality and faster time to market. From its inception, Real-time Studio was designed to support both systems and software development, making it the logical choice for such development. Omicron's real-time scheduling requirements make them an ideal user of the schedulability profile, which is fully implemented in Real-time Studio."

Dr. Körber continued, "The instruments we develop must also support a wide variety of data acquisition and measurement techniques. They are distributed systems that consist of a range of proprietary boards and embedded software. In addition to the control units, Omicron develops PC-level data acquisition and analysis software that use these control units to run surface analysis experiments. The acquisition software is also being designed with Real-time Studio. Finally, the agile development processes employed at Omicron demand tool support for highly iterative and incremental development cycles, so Real-time Studio is used as a project database accompanying the entire project lifecycle."

At the recent German ARTiSAN Users Group where Alan met with more than 30 customers of Real-time Studio, he commented, "We are especially pleased to hear of technologically advanced companies such as Omicron, where not only the power of Real-time Studio's multi-user repository is recognized, but it has become the centerpiece of their development process."
