7/7/2003 - Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the leading European supplier of Business Critical Computing solutions, has won a major IT infrastructure order for enterprise servers from British Sky Broadcasting. Following an extensive evaluation, BSkyB selected PRIMEPOWER Solaris-based UNIX servers and PRIMERGY Intel-based systems to power its major new Customer Relationship Management solution that will support the company's 6.7 million subscribers across the UK and Ireland.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers will install its top-of-the-range PRIMEPOWER PW2000 and PW2500 servers with 36 processors each at BSkyB's customer contact centres in Livingston and Dunfermline. When installed, the new PW2500 PRIMEPOWER system will also feature a Capacity on Demand capability based on Fujitsu Siemens Computers' powerful ESCoD software allowing six processors to be activated and crucially de-activated as required. The new PRIMEPOWER servers will support a range of Business Critical Computing applications from Oracle, CSG and Callidus, and will have some 28 additional front-end PRIMEPOWER 200/400 and 650 server systems to support Chordiant and IBM Websphere/MSQI applications.
Simon Post, BSkyB's Group Director of IT and Strategy, said: "With the number of Sky digital customers expected to reach seven million by the end of 2003, BSkyB is committed to responding quickly to rapidly-changing customer demands. Fujitsu Siemens Computers' enterprise services will support BSkyB's drive to lead innovation in customer service and maintain Sky digital's industry-leading levels of customer retention."
"We're delighted that the UK's leading digital television provider has selected an IT infrastructure platform from Fujitsu Siemens Computers to run its major new CRM solution," added Adrian v. Hammerstein, Chief Executive Officer for Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "This major contract clearly shows that Fujitsu Siemens Computers and our PRIMEPOWER offering deliver a powerful enterprise alternative for major organisations such as BSkyB. It also marks a renewal of BSkyB's long and successful business association with the Fujitsu Group, which first supplied BSkyB with Fujitsu mainframes for its original Analogue Customer Service system, as well as the company's original Pay Per View system and servers for the Digital Customer Service system during 1991 to 2001."
PRIMEPOWER - an ideal platform for IT infrastructure consolidation The PRIMEPOWER series is a range of state-of-the-art servers that combine mainframe-class availability, the performance capabilities of vector-processing machines and the open benefits of UNIX servers. Based on the industry-standard Solaris operating environment and the Fujitsu SPARC64TM microprocessor, the new PRIMEPOWER family scales from four to 128 processors and is an ideal server engine for IT infrastructure consolidation. The PRIMEPOWER 2000 is an ideal IT infrastructure platform for server consolidation, data warehousing, CRM and ASP applications as it offers mainframe-quality performance, up to 15 physically independent partitions for physical isolation, and advanced features such as powerful ARMTech resource management software which delivers optimum utilisation between partitions.
BSkyB is changing the face of entertainment. More than 15 million viewers in 6.7 million households enjoy an unprecedented choice of movies, news, entertainment and sports channels and interactive services on Sky digital - the UK's first and Europe's fastest-growing broadband digital television platform.
In addition to offering more than 200 channels, Sky digital, which launched in October 1998, offers a range of innovative interactive services that allow viewers to send e-mails, shop on screen, play games, select their own camera angles, vote, place bets and manage their finances - all via their TV. BSkyB again demonstrated its flair for innovation with the introduction in 2001 of the next-generation integrated digital satellite set-top box/personal video recorder, Sky+.
