7/2/2003 - ANT Limited and Lime Studios Ltd have announced a partnership to enable 3D games to be available on-demand for the television, over DSL networks using existing set top box (STB) technology. In the agreement, Lime Studios will develop a high performance gaming solution for ANT’s portability environment, the platform-integration layer of the ANT Fresco browser. By combining the two technologies, the resulting gaming solution will be fully compatible with STBs running ANT Fresco, the leading HTML browser and content rendering engine for the IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) market.
This new gaming solution will enable MSOs (multiple service operators) to begin exploiting the full potential of interactive TV by providing 3D gaming on-demand to the consumer through the press of a button on their remote control. It has been designed to play games remotely from the server, working with the existing deployed base of IP STBs, so there is no requirement for operators to invest in upgraded decoders to deploy the service into homes. All current and new deployments of STBs with ANT Fresco will be able to decode and render the games locally.
“We are very enthusiastic about working with Lime Studios. Their offering extends the range of products and services that ANT is able to deliver to its OEM and service operator customers,” said Simon Woodward, President and CEO of ANT Limited. “Lime Studios’ technology with ANT’s widely-used portability environment offers a minimal risk and cost-effective way of delivering a wide range of high quality games to multiple set top boxes, regardless of their processor or operating system.”
“By partnering with ANT we can leverage its dominant global IPTV penetration for this new gaming on-demand solution,” said Keith Johnson, CEO of Lime Studios. “Working together on specific market segments worldwide will be of immense mutual advantage to both companies and opens the way for IPTV service providers to take a share of the growing iTV games market.”
According to Informa Media, the rise of Internet games players worldwide is expected to rise from 18.3 million in 2002, to 83.2 million in 2006, representing a huge opportunity for service operators to gain from the growing market.
The joint solution offers games-on-demand to service operators, presenting an alternative way for games publishers to reach a mass audience, with new revenue streams from a largely new audience of casual gamers. For the consumer, it is an opportunity to have access to the latest games as a service from their digital provider.
