Cirrus Provides Surround-Sound to Onkyo USA's Audio/Video Receivers

7/2/2003 - Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS), announced that Onkyo USA will feature Cirrus' industry-leading highly integrated CS42518 and CS42528 surround-sound codecs in its new audio/video receivers.

The CS42518 and CS42528 support sample rates up to 192 kHz and provide the highest dynamic range — 110 dB and 114 dB, respectively — in a fully integrated solution. Onkyo has selected the Cirrus® CS42518 for its new TX-SR601 and Cirrus' CS42528 for its TX-SR701 model.

The TX-SR601 and TXSR701 feature six channels of amplification to take full advantage of Dolby® Digital EX and DTS®-ES soundtracks, HDTV-capable component video switching, powered zone two capability and Onkyo’s WRAT — Wide Range Amplifier Technology. The TX-SR701 adds THX® Surround EX Processing, DTS-96/24 processing, composite to S-Video conversion and back-lighting for the remote control. The TX-SR601 and TX-SR701 are both available now and carry suggested retail prices of $500 and $800, respectively.

In addition to the CS42518, the Onkyo TX-SR701 also features two of Cirrus' CS5333 two-channel 24-bit, 96 kHz audio analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Available in a low-profile 16-pin TSSOP package, the CS5333 provides high-quality audio-data conversion and consumes very little power.

Cirrus' CS425XX CODEC family consists of four pin-compatible devices — CS42516/26/18/28 — that support 192 kHz sampling, making them an ideal choice for audio video receivers, DVD receivers, digital mixing consoles and automotive audio systems. By integrating two 192 kHz ADCs and six or eight 192 kHz DACs, along with a 192 kHz S/PDIF receiver, all non-DSP functionality is on one chip — reducing overall system count from up to six parts to one in some cases, making the two-chip AVR design a reality.

“Combining Cirrus' CODECs and ADC capabilities is enabling us to create a cost-effective product line with best in class performance and leading-edge features,” said Don Milks, Onkyo USA’s National Product and Marketing Manager.

“The Cirrus audio solutions are designed to give OEMs a family of surround-sound CODECs that deliver multichannel 192 kHz DVD-audio capability, while helping manufacturers accelerate their time to market in a wide range of digital consumer electronics markets,” said Terry Leeder, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing, Cirrus.
