RTI Targets Control Systems on TimeSys Linux with Constellation

7/1/2003 - RTI (Real-Time Innovations) announced the availability of the Constellation software platform for control systems on TimeSys Linux RTOS, the industry's only single-kernel Linux real-time operating system.

Constellation provides a framework, components, and tools that simplify all aspects of control system programming, from initial design through field configuration. Constellation is deployed in control system applications including unmanned vehicles, military systems, and industrial automation devices. With this announcement, Constellation users can now take advantage of the true hard real-time capabilities of TimeSys Linux RTOS.

"The combination of RTI Constellation and TimeSys Linux makes good sense. Real-time control system engineers like Constellation because it enables rapid prototyping and high-level intelligent system development. They like TimeSys Linux because of the openness of the Linux Platform plus its deterministic attributes," said Dr. Scott Breneman, Constellation Product Manager.

"Having RTI's Constellation available for our customers will help us continue the rapid growth of TimeSys Linux in the industrial control, aerospace and defense markets," stated Mike Bauer, Vice President of Products at TimeSys Corporation. "With RTI's expertise in development tools for real-time control software, customers can now take advantage of Constellation's end-to-end tool chain and the benefits of Linux in a true Linux RTOS, TimeSys Linux."

The software platform is the foundation on which any control system is built. Historically, developers produced their own software platform, often for each new system and at great cost and risk. Constellation provides a complete software platform, from a field-proven framework to an end-to-end tool chain. The framework provides a flexible architecture upon which teams of developers can build modular solutions from re-usable components. The tool chain provides a graphical development environment that covers requirements analysis, software design, controls design, project management, networking, revision control, system integration, simulation, testing, and debugging.

TimeSys Linux RTOS is a complete, hardware-specific, ready-to-run real-time operating system and software development environment for embedded applications. At its base is TimeSys Linux GPL, the industry's lowest latency open source Linux kernel offering full kernel preemption, unlimited process priorities, enhanced schedulers, and high availability/carrier-grade features. The royalty-free TimeSys Linux RTOS is the only complete Linux distribution to add unique priority inversion avoidance mechanisms and high resolution timers to meet the performance requirements of the most demanding real-time systems.

Packaged with enhanced and certified device drivers that support all I/O peripherals to the edge of the board, cross-platform GNU tool chains, a root file system and full documentation, TimeSys Linux RTOS is delivered ready-to-run on more than 65 supported hardware platforms spanning 8 processor architectures and 35 processors. Engineers can improve their development experience through the use of TimeStorm Linux RTOS, which bundles TimeSys Linux with TimeSys' Windows and Linux-hosted integrated development environment and event tracing/debugging tools, TimeStorm and TimeTrace. Packaged in a complete, royalty-free product, TimeSys Linux RTOS helps reduce total cost of ownership, development risk, and time-to-market of advanced embedded systems.
