Jaluna Ships Three Linux Based Products for Jaluna-2 Family
6/30/2003 - Jaluna SA announced the availability of three Linux based products that compose the Jaluna-2 product family: Jaluna-2/EL, Jaluna-2/RT (previewed in February) and Jaluna-2/VL. These solutions address the needs of a wide range of network infrastructure equipment and leverage the momentum of Linux in the embedded systems industry.
"The use of Linux as an embedded operating system continues to gain momentum and serious consideration from embedded developers for their development projects," said Stephen Balacco, Senior Analyst at Venture Development Corporation. "The Jaluna-2 product family places Jaluna in a good position to capitalize on this opportunity because of its unique way to address the key requirements of today’s embedded systems industry."
"This announcement illustrates Jaluna’s commitment to address the business needs of the telecom and networking industry," said Michel Gien, president and CEO, Jaluna SA. "Jaluna-2 product family members complement each other to fulfill the requirements of a wide spectrum of network equipment and delivers on Jaluna’s promise to bring innovative extensions to Linux."
The Jaluna-2 product family is composed of:
- Jaluna-2/EL, the embedded Linux offering from Jaluna;
Jaluna-2/EL is the entry point of the Jaluna-2 product family and will have particular appeal to equipment manufacturers that require high quality product and dependable customer-oriented services.
It is aimed at supporting embedded systems running applications with non-critical requirements. Jaluna-2/RT, combining the C5TM micro-kernel and Linux;
Jaluna-2/RT dramatically extends the appeal of Linux for designs at the edge and in the core of the network infrastructure – providing applications with greater reactivity, predictability and security. In this case Linux is run side-by-side with a highly responsive, protected environment that handles critical tasks that are beyond the scope of a general-purpose embedded Linux operating system."Modern enterprise network equipment manufactured by our group at Nortel Networks requires combining critical real-time tasks with general purpose applications," said David Plainfossé, software project manager, Nortel Networks, "Jaluna-2/RT looks like an attractive way to address such needs."
- Jaluna-2/VL, combining the C5TM micro-kernel and several Linux instances;
This truly innovative solution enables network service providers to implement new services on a much lower number of systems and thus reduce their costs. This is achieved by means of several Linux instances running on a single machine in a controlled environment.
"Being able to run efficiently several Linux instances on the same hardware brings exciting scalability and availability opportunities for new generations networking equipment," said Timo Jokiaho, director of technology, Nokia Networks. "The innovative system software platforms based on COTS components delivered by Jaluna open up new perspectives to deliver competitive solutions to our customers."
Each of the Jaluna-2 family products is supplied on a subscription basis with no-royalty fee for deployed systems. It includes world-class technical support from recognized system experts. Comprehensive documentation accompanies the ready-to-use, integrated cross-development environment.
The Jaluna-2 product family is available on PowerPC (including PowerQUICCTM) and IA-32 processor families.
Easy and simple transition paths are guaranteed between product family members.
More details
Jaluna-2/EL,
The product package is based on the standard Linux tree and includes additional tools, BSP elements and a broad range of system utilities specifically designed for use in a cross-development environment including:- an Embedded Linux distribution including
1. Kernel 2.4.20
2. integrated host-target cross-development environment - standard APIs for application and kernel module development
- real-time patches
- basic core packages
- networking packages
- native target development environment packages
- configuration utilities
- an Embedded Linux distribution including
With its complete and up-to-date GNU-based cross-development tool chain, Jaluna-2/EL is attractive to developers of Linux applications for communication equipment and others embedded designs such as set-top boxes, telematics equipment, or routers.
- Jaluna-2/RT,
Combines the C5TM microkernel (derived from 5th generation of Sun Microsystems’ Chorus) and Jaluna’s embedded Linux distribution (Jaluna-2/EL) – both run in association on the same hardware. In addition to providing hard real-time capabilities, this product features rapid and secure Linux/Application restart using watchdog and persistent memory services. Jaluna-2/VL,
Combines the C5TM microkernel and several Jaluna-2/EL instances all running on the same hardware, thus providing truly independent Linux environments.This product can be used in a variety of configurations, such as:
- Multiple, independent application and OS stacks can run on the same platform. This provides support for rapid services deployment and eliminates any need to either modify the application stacks or split them across separate machines. The benefit being a reduction in associated hardware and operational costs.
- Two identical software instances run on the same platform. In this case functional and operational redundancy and high-availability are assured within the software framework, with the resultant reduction in hardware costs.
Jaluna-2’s combination of Linux and C5 can be deployed transparently on single board, multiple-board or in racks of computers. It provides total deployment flexibility and support for a very wide set of target platforms.
