6/30/2003 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW) announced that its Sun Fire B1600 Blade Platform has been selected by the Industrial Designers Society of America as a bronze winner of the 2003 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA). The Sun Fire B1600 Blade Platform design was chosen from among more than 1100 entries in ten different categories as an IDEA winner in the computer category, earning its place among some of the technology industry's most innovative product designs.
Specifically, the Sun Fire B1600 Blade Platform is recognized for its superior design and ergonomic aspects of its user interaction points. These include the unique latch and handle design, and the color coded service indicators used consistently across Sun's product line.
"The design of the Sun Fire B1600 Blade Platform reflects Sun's commitment to reducing cost and complexity for our customers, as well as our desire to build brand recognition through innovative design," said Phil Yurkonis, manager of Sun's User Centered Design Group. "We focused on making it easier for data center managers to install, maintain, monitor, and manage the system, with the objective of creating a delightful user experience."
Based on its unique, modular form, the Sun Fire B1600 Blade Platform can reduce customers' total cost of ownership by enabling them to better manage their data center and its resources. Through its design, the platform helps enable greater compute resources in a smaller footprint; improved serviceability; higher level of uptime; simplified installation and reconfiguration; lower power consumption; and reduced deployment and personnel costs.
Presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and sponsored by BusinessWeek, the Industrial Design Excellence Awards are dedicated to fostering business and public understanding of the importance of industrial design excellence to the quality of life and the economy. IDEA winners are selected based on five criteria of industrial design excellence: design innovation, benefit to the user, benefit to the client/business, ecological responsibility and appropriate aesthetics and appeal. Recognized as one of the premier awards for industrial design worldwide, IDEA awards are given to those products that raise the bar in marrying design and functionality in their respective category. Sun Microsystems' Sun Fire B1600 Blade Platform was the only server of its kind chosen by the esteemed panel of IDSA jurors.
