Fujitsu Supplies Verizon with Next Generation Add/Drop Multiplexers

6/26/2003 - Verizon has selected the Next Generation Add/Drop Multiplexer (NGADM) platforms from Fujitsu, the FLASHWAVE® 4500 core transport system, the FLASHWAVE 4300 aggregation system and the FLASHWAVE 4100 access system, as well as NGADM products from other suppliers, for SONET services. The FLASHWAVE 4000 products feature advanced data functionality and traffic grooming to enable a wide range of multiservice solutions for metro interoffice and access applications. With this selection, Verizon is well positioned to offer next-generation services to its subscribers, while conserving operating expenses, reducing network complexity and maintaining compatibility with existing network hardware and systems.

“We are extremely excited to be continuing our 20 year relationship with Verizon,” said George Chase, group president and chief operating officer of Fujitsu Network Communications. “As technology and service demand has advanced, we’ve remained in lock-step with Verizon to stay at the forefront of the telecommunications industry. Fujitsu is in a unique position to use the experience gained while working with Verizon and its predecessor companies to provide the world-class network solutions that Verizon can use for its current and future networks.”

The selection is the culmination of the NGADM RFP process, which included rigorous lab testing and a comprehensive field trial. Initial commercial shipments are beginning.

“During the past 10 years, Fujitsu established a dominant market leadership position in North America with its classic SONET ADM platforms, particularly in metro applications, where the company controlled 56 percent of the market in 2002,” said Dana Cooperson, group and program director of Optical Networks Global at RHK Inc. “By securing this contract for its multiservice SONET product line, Fujitsu extends a key customer relationship and bolsters its position in the next-generation ADM market.”

Verizon will be utilizing the FLEXR® GT craft interface software and the NETSMART® 1500 element management system to manage the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 4000 product family.
