6/26/2003 - Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) and TSMC (NYSE: TSM) are celebrating 10 years of developing and delivering leading-edge semiconductor technology. As a result of its partnership with TSMC, Altera last year shipped the industry’s first production-ready FPGAs based on the 0.13-micron all-layer copper process technology, including the high-performance StratixTM, low-cost CycloneTM, and transceiver-based Stratix GX device families. Today, these products remain the industry’s only 0.13-micron FPGA products shipping in volume production.
“Our long-standing partnership with TSMC is one of the key reasons behind Altera’s success. They are a vital partner for Altera and an integral part of our long-term strategy,” said John Daane, president, CEO and chairman of the board at Altera. “To create the world’s best programmable logic devices, we require the most advanced semiconductor process technology and TSMC has delivered. We look forward to building on this long standing relationship in the future.”
To date, Altera has shipped more than 200,000 units based on TSMC’s 0.13-micron process, representing 13 different device types. With the successful execution and rollout of 0.13-micron technology, Altera and TSMC engineers are currently working towards delivering the industry’s first production 90-nanometer FPGA technology in 2004, featuring Altera’s next-generation high-density family.
“Altera and TSMC have enjoyed a long and successful relationship over the past decade,” said Dr. Rick Tsai, president and COO of TSMC. “Through our close relationship, together we have developed and delivered many semiconductor technology firsts. And we look forward to working together on next-generation technology that will shape our future.”
TSMC is the world’s largest dedicated semiconductor foundry, providing the industry’s leading process technology and the foundry industry’s largest portfolio of process-proven library, IP, design tools and reference flows. The company operates one advanced 300-mm wafer fab, six eight-inch fabs and one six-inch wafer fab. TSMC also has substantial capacity commitments at two joint venture fabs (Vanguard and SSMC) and at its wholly owned subsidiary, WaferTech. In early 2001, TSMC became the first IC manufacturer to announce a 90-nm technology alignment program with its customers. TSMC’s corporate headquarters are in Hsin-Chu, Taiwan.
