Cypress Rolls Out Cynapse to Unite Software Platform for NSE Families

6/24/2003 - Cypress Semiconductor (NYSE: CY) announced the launch of its CynapseTM Software Platform (SP), a unified software environment for application simulation and development for all Cypress network search engine (NSE) families.

Cynapse SP provides uniform application programming interfaces (APIs), software and hardware system simulation environments, performance evaluation tools, reference applications and diagnostics, as well as application notes, white papers and user manuals for all ASIC-attached and NPU-attached NSEs from Cypress.

“Software is becoming a key differentiator in the network search arena,” said Rick Tinling, Director of Software Engineering in Cypress’s Data Communications Division. “Software engineers working on networking systems need to produce reliable code while facing acute time-to-market pressures. The Cynapse software platform enables them to easily simulate and integrate the highest-performance search functionality into their systems. Cynapse SP is another milestone in Cypress’s ongoing commitment to provide complete solutions to its customers.”

Reliability is a primary concern in networking systems and software. Through highly structured testing, equivalence checking and stringent debug methodologies, Cynapse SP enables development of production quality code and easy integration of search functionality into packet processing systems. Advanced diagnostic tools help engineers develop reliable code; fully tested reference applications, simulation models, APIs and drivers ensure that system and software engineers can spend more time in performance enhancement and less time writing and debugging code. That translates into faster time to market for packet processing applications, including routers, L2/L3 switches, cable modem termination systems (CMTS), DSL access multiplexers (DSLAM), storage switches and security systems.

Cynapse’s software models map easily to hardware because of clearly defined device access APIs and component interfaces, enabling engineers to move smoothly from simulation models to hardware implementation—resulting in a substantial savings in development time and costs. Designers can later re-use the same production code when they migrate their designs to more advanced NSEs.

Cypress’s Network Search Engines
Cynapse Software Platform will support the AyamaTM 10000 and AyamaTM 20000 NSE families as well as all future generations of Cypress NSEs. The Ayama 10000 family of NSEs will maintain the Cypress lead in commercial TCAM market by extending the density and speed of the NSE70000 family with differentiated features such as Mini-KeyTM power management and Soft PriorityTM table management. MiniKeyTM power management reduces power by engaging only the portion of the NSE array that contains entries of interest, thereby reducing power consumption by as much as 70%. Soft PriorityTM table management enables dynamic prioritization of entries for longest prefix match (LPM) in Layer 3 forwarding applications, eliminating the latency associated with routing table updates.

The Ayama 20000 NSEs will incorporate all the features of Ayama 10000 along with LA-1 interface, a standard adopted by the NPF. The Ayama 20000 NSE devices will provide a glue-less connection to Intel’s IXP2400/2800 network processors and AMCC’s next-generation network processors that support the LA-1 standard.
