Adaptec Delivers Advanced Protection in New Serial ATA Raid Controller

6/24/2003 - Adaptec, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADPT), the global leader in storage infrastructure solutions, introduced a Serial ATA RAID controller featuring Adaptec's enterprise-level data protection capabilities to maximize performance and data availability for high-end workstations and entry-level servers using Serial ATA disk drives. The controller is part of an Adaptec Serial ATA RAID family that features the robust reliability and compatibility of Adaptec's SCSI products to smooth migration to Serial ATA systems.

The volume of electronic documents, presentations, email, video and other reference data - highly valuable but infrequently accessed information - generated by small and midsize businesses is growing. Businesses working to manage this data require servers, external storage appliances and networked storage solutions that deliver cost-effective storage capacity, fast data access and robust data protection.

The 4-port Serial ATA RAID 2410SA, now available through worldwide distribution, combines Adaptec's leading RAID technology with the cost advantages of Serial ATA to deliver fast, cost-effective connectivity and data protection for internal and external storage and storage area networks.

"More small and midsize businesses are automating core business functions such as human resources, payroll, accounting and inventory management, driving demand for higher levels of application performance and data availability typically associated with large enterprises," said Steve Cochran, vice president of business and marketing for Adaptec's Storage Solutions Group. "Adaptec is combining its enterprise-class RAID capabilities with Serial ATA's fast data access and low price-per-gigabyte to help these customers better move, manage and protect this information."

Adaptec's newest Serial ATA RAID controller extends Adaptec's industry leadership in RAID data protection. According to 2002 tracking data from The NPD Group, Adaptec leads the industry in sales of SCSI RAID controllers through U.S. distribution with 82 percent market share. Adaptec is leveraging its RAID leadership and working with major disk drive makers, resellers and original equipment manufacturers to drive Serial ATA adoption.

"Explosive data growth among small and midsize businesses is increasing demand for storage solutions that deliver cost-effective server connectivity, enterprise-level data protection and greater throughput," said Roger Cox, Research Vice President, Server Storage and RAID Worldwide, for Gartner Dataquest. "Serial ATA combines all three to improve application performance and bring the cost of data reliability to a point where virtually all data can be stored on redundant systems."

Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 2410SA
Adaptec's Serial ATA RAID controllers operate under the same browser-based management software as Adaptec's SCSI RAID and emerging Serial Attached SCSI RAID products. The browser-based software management tool simplifies storage management and reduces total cost of ownership by allowing end users to remotely monitor and configure RAID subsystems across multiple protocols. The software management tool reduces training costs for resellers, OEMs and end users by enabling them to use a single management platform for Adaptec's Ultra320 SCSI, Serial ATA and emerging Serial Attached SCSI solutions.

The Adaptec 2410SA delivers best-of-class price-performance and allows customers to meet their expanding storage needs through:

  • Advanced RAID 5 and 10 data protection to maximize data availability and system performance. RAID levels 0, 1 and JBOD are also included.
  • Up to 1.5 gigabit-per-second throughput per port to improve workstation and entry-level server performance.
  • RAID Level Migration to allow customers to configure fault-tolerance settings on the fly.
  • Online Capacity Expansion to allow end users to seamlessly add storage capacity.
  • Adaptec-exclusive technology that lets customers use the full available capacity of all drives attached to the controller, even if the drives are different sizes. Traditional products limit use of disk drive space to the smallest-capacity drive in an array.
  • Long, thin cables and small connectors to improve chassis airflow and cooling, simplify cable routing and allow system builders to design smaller form factors.

Adaptec Serial ATA RAID
The Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 2410SA joins the 2-port Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA as part of a growing product family that includes motherboard solutions and zero-channel, 8- and 16-port add-in RAID cards featuring software- or processor-based data protection. The family combines Adaptec's proven RAID technology with Serial ATA's low price-per-gigabyte to provide fast information access and cost-effective data protection for desktop PCs, workstations and entry-level servers.

Pricing
Manufacturers suggested retail price for the Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 2410SA is $390.
