6/20/2003 - Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: VTSS), Vixel Corporation (Nasdaq: VIXL) and Xyratex Storage Systems, announced that Xyratex will use the Vitesse VSC120 Enclosure Management Controller and the VSC7197 20-port Fibre Channel Switch to deploy a high-performance Fibre Channel disk enclosure known as an SBOD – Switched Bunch Of Disks.
The technologies from Vitesse and Vixel will enable point-to-point switched connectivity between the controller and individual disk drives in the storage array, creating an SBOD which dramatically enhances storage system Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (RAS) characteristics. Furthermore, the use of Vixel's InSpeedTM SOC 320/Vitesse VSC7197 Switching technology enhances performance by dramatically reducing SAN traffic latency. The VSC120 and Vitesse's Software Development Kit permits the Disk Array to transmit enclosure information to the SAN manager directly through the Fibre Channel links (in-band management) or through alternative paths such as RS-232, IPMI or Ethernet (out-of-band management).
"We are very excited at the prospect of offering our OEMs and Systems Integrators the first disk enclosure to incorporate this second generation of InSpeed technology. The low latency, enhanced connectivity and the ability to monitor and isolate individual drives in high disk count installations will dramatically improve performance and availability," said Jon Haley, vice president of sales and marketing, Xyratex Storage Systems.
Using the technology from Vitesse and Vixel, Xyratex is developing a new Fibre Channel disk array, enhancing its product line with best-in-class diagnostics and fault isolation features that provide storage area network (SAN) managers with unprecedented knowledge of SAN health. These enhancements deliver higher data availability and lower maintenance costs to the end user.
Steve Duplessie, senior analyst and founder of The Enterprise Storage Group, said, "Xyratex's decision to create an SBOD-based storage enclosure tracks well with what we see as a clear move by the storage industry towards switched back-end architectures. With affordable technologies available from companies such as Vixel and Vitesse, end users should expect to see more reliable and more easily serviced storage systems as solutions providers make the move to switched back-end architectures."
Vitesse and Vixel will collaborate with Xyratex to provide implementation and application development assistance throughout the SBOD development process. Xyratex's Fibre Channel disk enclosures will be available in the third quarter of 2003.
"Xyratex is a world-class storage provider and their use of the Vitesse VSC120 and VSC7197 chipset is further proof that the industry places value on back-end switching and in-band management capabilities," stated Bob Rumer, director of strategic marketing for the Datacom Division of Vitesse. "The days of using Port Bypass Circuits (PBCs) to build unmanaged JBODs are over; they are just too difficult to diagnose and isolate faults."
Beth White, vice president of marketing for Vixel commented, "This is another example of the benefits associated with Vixel's award-winning, field proven InSpeed technology. We're looking forward to supporting both Vitesse and Xyratex to help ensure a successful deployment."
