VMETRO First to Break 200 MB/s Barrier with Ready-to-run Recorder

6/19/2003 - VMETRO (Houston, TX / Oslo, Norway) announced a new generation MDR (MIDAS Data Recorder) product; the first ever to break the 200 MB/s speed barrier in a standard single board recorder. MDR is a family of ready-to-run COTS recorders for FPDP, FPDP II and 2.4 Gb/s Serial FPDP intended for the embedded market and aimed at high-performance data acquisition applications such as radar, sonar, signal intelligence, image capture, wafer inspection and medical tomography. The fully preprogrammed MDR is designed for easy integration, eliminating costly development man-hours.

The MDR is delivered as a single VME card using Fibre Channel JBOD and RAID systems as storage devices. The software includes the essential striping capability necessary to work with low-cost JBODs, distributing the data through an advanced buffering system to several disks concurrently in order to sustain the high total transfer rate. The advanced disk grouping system provides extreme flexibility and scalability in the storage system where any set of disks in a Fibre Channel SAN (Storage Area Network) can be virtualized as a single storage unit. Each storage device (disk group) contains a high performance recording table optimized for fast, predictable, real-time access and allowing multiple terabytes of data acquisition storage to be easily managed from host workstations. All MDR models are supported by Windows and Solaris MDR Host Software that allows workstation users to upload, analyze, archive, and/or download recorded or simulated sensor data files.

The MDR-620 is VMETRO’s latest and fastest addition to the PowerMIDAS data recorder product family with a performance range from 80 MB/s to the new 240 MB/s. The new model will start shipping in July 2003 and is available in both commercial and ruggedized versions.

VMETRO provides board-level products for high-performance embedded real-time systems, with products based on open standards like VMEbus, PCI, RACEway, RACE++ and Fibre Channel. Founded in 1986 in Norway, and in the US since 1987, VMETRO is the world's largest manufacturer of bus analyzers for standard buses such as VME, PCI-X, PCI, PMC and CompactPCI. VMETRO also offers the MIDAS family of PMC-based I/O Subsystems for VMEbus and RACEway, with various PMC I/O modules for high-performance data acquisition and interconnects, and the MDR series of high-speed RAID/JBOD real-time data recorders. VMETRO is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange (ticker VME).
