QNX Neutrino RTOS Provides Info to Hyundai Drivers

6/18/2003 - QNX Software Systems announced that Hyundai Autonet, a leader in automotive multimedia electronics, has selected the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating (RTOS) for its Driver Information System (DIS) Platform.

This telematics platform, based on the mobileGTTM architecture, is one of the first to use the emerging networking standard MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) to provide information and entertainment throughout the car. MOST, a fiber-optic network optimized for the automobile industry, together with the QNX Neutrino RTOS, enables the DIS platform to simultaneously run navigation systems, hands-free phone modules, rear-seat entertainment screens, and other media-rich applications. The unit also integrates standard automotive controls like window lifts, seat adjusts, and HVAC through a single, multi-function console.

To manage the complexity of system's many DIS functions, Hyundai Autonet uses a range of automotive-grade QNX software modules, including the Photon microGUI®, audio and graphics drivers, networking stacks, and a flash file manager. The modular architecture of the QNX Neutrino RTOS keeps the system "future ready," allowing application and system software to easily be added or updated and lengthening the life cycle of the platform.

"We get a distinct competitive advantage by using QNX Neutrino in our design," said Suk-Jin Kang, CEO of Hyundai Autonet. "Besides providing the ultra-reliability that it's renowned for, QNX Neutrino lets us bundle more functionality into a single platform, at less cost."

"We're thrilled that Hyundai Autonet has chosen QNX for their sophisticated telematics platform," said Dan Dodge, CEO of QNX Software Systems. "QNX operating system technology, with its proven track record in 911 systems, high-speed trains, and thousands of other mission-critical applications, not only provides the reliability demanded by systems like Hyundai Autonet, but offers the flexibility to support new telematics services as they come down the road."

QNX and Hyundai Autonet teams are now demonstrating the pilot system, with full production expected by 2004. A demonstration of the DIS platform can be seen at the upcoming 10th ITS World Congress and Exhibition 2003, November 17 - 20, in Madrid, Spain.
