6/17/2003 - TimeSys(TM) Corporation announced that it has partnered with Artesyn Communication Products (Nasdaq NM: ATSN), a leading supplier of WAN infrastructure products, to make its embedded TimeSys Linux RTOS and development tools available for Artesyn's family of PowerPC-based CompactPCI Packet Switched Backplane (cPSB) telecom boards. Together, the TimeSys operating system and Artesyn boards will create a carrier-grade real-time platform ideally suited for building wireless and wireline WAN infrastructure products for applications such as WAN access, SS7/SIGTRAN signaling and gateways, softswitches, real-time control, and traffic processing.
TimeSys will deliver its TimeSys Linux Software Development Kits (SDKs), which include its embedded Linux RTOS and development tools, to Artesyn's PowerPC-based single board computers. The first TimeSys Linux SDK will support the Katana750i and Katana 3750 boards, both of which are equipped with a PICMG 2.16-compliant cPSB interface.
The Katana 750i is a single-processor cPSB board with two PMC mezzanine sites that can be readily configured for a variety of telecom applications by adding custom PMC cards and software supplied by Artesyn and its third party vendors. The Katana 3750 features three PowerPC processors, a pair of external Gigabit Ethernet ports (attached to the cPSB backplane), and a managed Ethernet switch, which routes data between Katana's three processors and two Gigabit Ethernet ports. Both boards provide an I(2)C-based, PICMG 2.9 Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) that makes it easy to monitor, control and exchange management information between the Katana boards and shelf management controllers.
"We are seeing increased interest in embedded Linux as a platform for building carrier-grade WAN infrastructure products," said Todd Wynia, vice president of marketing at Artesyn. "TimeSys' carrier-grade implementation and hard real-time characteristics, coupled with its easy-to-use professional GUI development tools, provide an ideal development and target environment for our CompactPCI Packet Switching Backplane WAN products."
"Artesyn's cPSB boards provide an excellent platform for deploying our carrier-grade Linux RTOS," said TimeSys CEO Larry Weidman. "We are excited to be working with Artesyn to provide a complete embedded Linux solution that takes full advantage of Artesyn's advanced LAN/WAN, I/O, switching, and management capabilities. Artesyn boards equipped with the TimeSys RTOS and development tools will greatly speed time-to-market for OEMs developing carrier-grade telecom products."
TimeSys Linux SDKs are complete, hardware-specific, ready-to-run software development kits. TimeSys SDKs include TimeSys Linux, tested and certified device drivers that support all I/O peripherals to the edge of the board, cross-platform GNU tool chains, a root file system and full documentation. Professional Edition SDKs add TimeStorm and TimeTrace, TimeSys' Windows- and Linux-hosted development and event tracing/debugging tools. TimeSys Linux/Real-Time is a royalty-free Linux RTOS that enhances TimeSys Linux to meet the hard real-time requirements of military/aerospace and telecommunications applications. Packaged in a complete, royalty-free product, TimeSys Linux SDKs help reduce total cost of ownership, development risks, and time-to-market of advanced embedded systems.
