Broadcom Wireless LAN Solutions Complies with IEEE 802.11g Standard

6/16/2003 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), the leading provider of silicon solutions enabling broadband communications, announced that its 54gTM wireless LAN solutions comply with the newly-ratified IEEE 802.11g standard. 802.11g is expected to become the new mainstream wireless LAN technology, extending the data rate of the 802.11b standard from 11 Mbps to 54 Mbps. Broadcom’s maximum performance implementation of the 802.11g standard, known as 54gTM, provides optimum speed, range and security capabilities and has become the industry’s premier 802.11g solution. Broadcom began shipping standard-compliant OneDriverTM software last month and all 54gTM-based products in the field are capable of being upgraded to the final standard.

“Ratification of the 802.11g specification is an important milestone in the development of wireless LAN technology,” said Will Strauss of Forward Concepts. “By guaranteeing compliance for millions of pre-standard products already in the market, Broadcom is accelerating migration to completely interoperable, standards-compliant networks.”

Broadcom was the first vendor to ship solutions based on the 802.11g draft specification, and has since attained significant market leadership with its 54gTM products. According to The NPD Group, 54gTM-based products represent 93 percent of all 802.11g equipment sold through US retail distribution. Additionally, all 802.11g-enabled notebooks that have been sold to date by major PC vendors include Broadcom’s 54gTM technology.

“Broadcom is proud to have delivered on the original promise for 54gTM technology,” said Jeff Thermond, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom’s Home and Wireless Networking Business Unit. “Customers and end-users have already benefited from the use of 54gTM wireless networking products that can now be made 802.11g standard compliant.”

The world’s leading hardware vendors – including Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Belkin, Buffalo/MELCO, Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), Fujitsu, Gateway (NYSE: GTW), Hewlett-Packard and Linksys – have implemented 54gTM technology in notebook PCs, client devices, access points, routers, cable modems and DSL modems. Many of these partners have announced that their products based on 54gTM are compliant with the standard and will provide current wireless customers the option of upgrading their 54gTM equipment with a simple software download. Existing 54gTM products can interoperate at up to 54 Mbps with all 802.11g products, whether or not they are upgraded to comply with the standard. Users should check with their product provider for the recommended course of action.
