6/10/2003 - PointBase®, Inc. announced that FieldWorker Products Ltd. has integrated PointBase mobile database and synchronization products into a software tool kit used by agricultural agencies to forecast crop yields, detect and identify problems, and manage production on a regional or national basis.
FieldWorker Products develops Java-based mobile data solutions including toolkits for integrators, software developers and corporations across many vertical markets. FieldWorker has become a premier supplier of mobile data solutions for the oil and gas, forestry, agricultural, military and environmental markets, as well as local, state and federal governments.
"PointBase’s all-Java data management and synchronization products provide a tremendous advance in making mobile devices practical for field data collection and aggregation," said Peter Neve, president at Fieldworker. "FieldWorker can now provide application services for synchronization, data collection forms deployment, work order deployment, XML reporting and web-based integration to disparate systems that use XML. Our customers can deploy many discrete groups of users, such as different customers using our solutions or different departments in a company that has deployed our enterprise solution."
Recently, FieldWorker helped a customer develop a data collection system for agricultural bureaus and growers. PointBase products allowed the end-user to pull together an unprecedented number of agricultural field observations from thousands of field locations into a single database on a real-time basis. Agronomists can now put this data to work immediately to identify crop-growing challenges or predict production levels based on analysis of better, more complete and more timely data than has ever been available before.
"The ability to predict crop harvests and hazards quickly and accurately has enormous economic implications," said Bruce Scott, CEO of PointBase. “It’s exciting to reflect on what customers like FieldWorker have accomplished since we launched our Mobility Initiative last year. Their application of our mobile products shows significant progress towards using mobile devices not only across industries, but for the benefit of people at every economic level, no matter where they live or work."
Only recently have such projects been feasible. Gathering and integrating critical economic data in real time from distant, scattered locations was simply not possible until now. The FieldWorker project is an early example but, by 2006, an estimated 39 million workers will rely on enterprise-level mobility solutions.
A key to such systems will be fast, reliable access to corporate data even when remote locations only allow intermittent connectivity to a corporate database. Mobile devices must not only store data but must be capable of running applications to use such data in the absence of a connection. Additionally, to preserve their investment, mobile application developers need to recognize the need for mobile applications to run on multiple platforms. PointBase products, designed for mobile devices that need to store data and run applications remotely, offer the cross-platform portability that only Java products can provide.
