6/5/2003 - Mindspeed Technologies, Inc., the Internet infrastructure business of Conexant Systems, Inc., (NASDAQ: CNXT), announced the latest additions to its family of crosspoint switches. The M21100 and M21106 4 x 4 crosspoint switches integrate the company’s patented Amplif-Eye signal-conditioning technology, making them ideal for multi-rate backplane-oriented systems.
The M21106 includes integrated per-channel multi-rate clock and data recovery (CDR) circuits operating from 1.0 Gbps to 3.2 Gbps. By adding the latest advancements in adaptive equalization and output pre-emphasis, the new devices reduce overall system cost through use of lower-cost board materials and components. Moreover, link performance is increased by allowing robust reception and transmission of up to 3.2 Gbps signals through trace lengths of 60” and higher of FR-4 and multiple connectors.
“Our latest offering will allow us to expand into new markets while enabling customers to cost-reduce existing systems,” said Babak Nabili, director of marketing for Mindspeed. “These devices extend our broad line of field-proven crosspoint switches, providing our customers with design flexibility, ease of use, and high-performance capability for increased design margin.”
The M21100 and M21106 are targeted for use in a wide variety of equipment including enterprise and metro networks as well as storage applications.
The M21100 crosspoint switch integrates a unique output pre-emphasis technology that operates without the need for a recovered clock. The integrated adaptive equalization feature is capable of supporting multiple data rates over various trace lengths. The crosspoint switches can be configured through either an I˛C interface, or alternatively via hardware pins, thereby eliminating the need for an external micro-controller. Additionally, the M21106 features four (4) integrated multi-rate CDRs, which can independently operate, with or without a reference clock, between 1.0 Gbps to 3.2 Gpbs.
The M21100 and M21106 support DC-Coupled connections to CML, LVDS, LVPECL, and Infiniband for design flexibility. The I/O polarity can also be programmed for ease of layout. The switches support any combination of OC-48, OC-48 with forward error correction (FEC), Fibre Channel, 2x Fibre Channel, 10x Fibre Channel, Infiniband, Gigabit Ethernet, and XAUI data rates. Furthermore, built-in pattern generators and receivers can be used for system-level testing and board level diagnostics to reduce development costs and design time.
Typical power consumption for the M21100 is 180mW. In case of the M21106, the power consumption is as low as 360mW with all channels and CDR configured and active. Moreover, the CDRs enable hot swapping of line or switch cards for added system benefits.
Pricing and Availability
The devices are packaged in 72-terminal, 10-mm multi-lead frame (MLF). Sample quantities and evaluation boards are available now. Per-unit OEM pricing in volumes of 1,000 is $19.95 for the M21100 and $74.95 for the M21106.
