6/5/2003 - Mindspeed Technologies, Inc., the Internet infrastructure business of Conexant Systems, Inc., (NASDAQ: CNXT), announced the industry’s highest-performance, most flexible clock-and-data recovery (CDR) devices. The family of four multi-rate quad and octal CDRs provide offer unprecedented design flexibility and cost-reduction features.
All four devices are equipped with Mindspeed’s fourth-generation patented Amplif-EyeTM signal conditioning technology that enables manufacturers to use lower cost board materials and components with increased design margin.
Multi-rate capabilities allow the three quad M21001, M21011, M21012, and octal M21050 CDRs to be used in Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, Infiniband, SONET, and backplanes for telecom, datacom, and enterprise applications.
“These four new quad and octal CDRs offer our customers tremendous design flexibility in systems across a wide range of applications extending beyond our traditional network infrastructure markets, including storage-area-networking (SAN) and various enterprise applications,” said Babak Nabili, director of marketing for Mindspeed.
“Combining performance features such as integrated output pre-emphasis and adaptive input equalization with the industry’s lowest power consumption for CDRs, these new devices enable equipment manufacturers to lower system costs while accelerating time-to-market for their products,” Nabili added.
The M21001, M21011, and M21012 quad devices operate between 42 Mbps to 800 Mbps, 1 Gbps to 3.2 Gbps, and 42 Mbps to 3.2 Gbps, respectively. The octal M21050 operates between 1.0 Gbps to 3.2 Gbps.
Mindspeed's Amplif-Eye patented signal-conditioning includes adaptive input equalization for multiple data rates and output pre-emphasis without the need for a recovered clock, allowing robust reception and transmission of signals up to 3.2 Gbps to other devices at least 60 inches away.
The user-selectable I/O interface types allow DC-coupling to CML, Infiniband, LVDS, and LVPECL for ease of design-in. The quads can operate from a single 1.8V, 2.5V, or 3.3V power supply and the octal from a 1.8V or 2.5V supply.
The quad CDRs sport the industry’s lowest power consumption at 340mW typical with all channels on. Each device can accomplish frequency acquisition with or without an external reference clock, further reducing the number of external components required for operation. The built-in frequency synthesizer allows multi-rate operation, while operating with a single reference clock for ease of use. The devices can be controlled either through hardwired pins or an I˛C interface for cost optimization and flexibility in varying applications. Moreover, the CDRs enable hot swapping of line or switch cards for added system benefits.
Each device includes a built-in test pattern generator and receiver for reducing debug time and development costs.
Pricing and Availability
Mindspeed's new CDR devices and evaluation modules are available now. In OEM quantities, the M21001 is priced at $31.95; the M21011 is priced at $64.95; and the M21012 and M21050 are each priced at $84.95.
