6/3/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) demonstrated its industry-leading test solution for virtual private LAN services, or VPLS, which also is being demonstrated at the MPLS/Frame Relay Alliance Forum booth no. 10315.
VPLS is an emerging Layer-2 virtual private network (VPN) technology that provides Ethernet services between dispersed customer sites. Effectively, VPLS offers simple Ethernet connectivity across a service provider's network. VPLS places significant new demands upon the provider edge (PE) routers that offer VPLS services. These routers are needed to enable Ethernet services, including MAC learning, Ethernet switching and virtual circuit management, and must be scaled to support many customers on many different VPNs.
"The key test for equipment manufacturers and service providers is verifying the scalability of the PE (provider edge) router, especially its ability to handle hundreds of peers, tens of thousands of virtual circuits, and millions of Ethernet clients," said Dave Bass, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Data Networks Division. "With our VPLS test solution, we are exceeding our customers' scalability requirements as they ramp up their Virtual private LAN services."
Agilent's test system is unique in its ability to simulate very large networks -- replacing the need for expensive testbeds -- and to measure the traffic forwarding performance of VPLS-enabled routers. Intelligent topology creation allows RouterTester 900 users to define large VPLS topologies, to generate VPLS traffic and to make traffic measurements across these topologies. Integrated data and control plane stressing allows for realistic test scenarios and rapid test execution. Agilent has already proven its VPLS solution with successful live field trials at leading VPLS NEMs.
Agilent's VPLS test offering is expected to be available as part of the RouterTester 900 6.1 software release. Shipments are expected in September 2003. A white paper on VPLS and information on these products is available at www.agilent.com/comms/routertester.
