Agilent Unveils IrDA Software for Embedded Infrared Communications

6/3/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) introduced an IrDA Protocol Stack software, a fast and cost-effective solution for designers embedding IrDA (Infrared Data Association)-compatible wireless communications in products ranging from new mobile phones, PDAs, office equipment and digital cameras to medical and industrial automation equipment.

"Agilent is one of the few companies to offer a broad line of SIR, MIR and FIR infrared transceivers and a total IrDA software solution," said Kee Hane Ngoh, operations manager of Agilent's Infrared Products Operation. "By providing one-stop shopping for a fully integrated hardware/software solution, we lower our customer's costs and accelerate their time to market. Our new Protocol Stack provides a fast and efficient way to implement an IrDA-compliant interface for wireless communications."

The Agilent HSDL-S100 IrDA Protocol Stack provides everything necessary to manage data transfer, based on the IrDA standard, at rates of up to 4 Mb/s, and will operate on any platform that supports the ANSI C programming language.

The Agilent IrDA Protocol Stack includes Object Exchange (OBEX) and Infrared for Mobile Communications (IrMC) modules, which facilitate wireless file exchange and data synchronization. These modules provide a high-level application protocol interface (API) to standard applications, which enables users to exchange and synchronize data between wireless devices. The stack is complete with IrLAP (infrared link access protocol), LM-MUX (link management multiplexer), IrLMP-IAS (IrDA link management protocol information-access services) and Tiny TP (tiny transport protocol), and is primary and secondary channel data link compatible. Optional add-ons include IrComm serial and parallel port emulation, IrOBEX (IrDA Object Exchange Protocol) and the Ir-TranP system for the transfer of digital still images.

U.S. Pricing and Availability
The Agilent HSDL-S100 IrDA Protocol Stack is priced at $25,000, with add-ons at $7,500 each. Technical support, training and integration services are also available. The software solution is available through Agilent's direct sales channel and Agilent's worldwide distribution partners. Further information on Agilent's infrared products is available at
