6/3/2003 - PMC-Sierra(TM), Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS - News) introduced the CHESS(TM) Wideband, a highly integrated solution for grooming up to 40 Gbit/s of T1/E1, T3/E3 and emerging Ethernet over SONET/SDH access services in metro transport networks.
The CHESS Wideband includes the PM5369 TUPP(TM) 9953, a 10 Gbit/s Tributary Unit Pointer Processor and the PM5370 WSE(TM) 40, a 40 Gbit/s capacity non-blocking VT/TU/STS/AU cross-connect. The CHESS Wideband VT/TU grooming solution provides cost-effective in-service upgrades to Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPP), sub-wavelength Digital Cross-Connect systems (DCS), and Add/Drop Multiplexers (ADM).
CHESS Wideband Provides Flexibility and Scalability for Both Centralized and Distributed Grooming PMC-Sierra's CHESS Wideband products are well suited to provide both distributed and centralized VT/TU grooming. Traditionally, carriers have provided wideband switching at a large, centralized digital cross-connect in the core of the network. With the addition of a VT/TU server card to an existing STS/AU-based ADM, carriers can provide distributed VT/TU grooming at the edge of the network. The emerging generation of equipment providing distributed VT/TU grooming at the edge of the network offers a highly integrated, scalable solution that removes the need to backhaul all traffic to the core and as a result improves fiber efficiency and reduces equipment costs for carriers.
"PMC-Sierra's TUPP 9953 and WSE 40 devices provide a feature rich, scalable solution ideally suited for our next-generation optical cross-connect platform," said Nik Graef, head of R&D, OND Germany, Alcatel. "After working closely with PMC-Sierra through our design and development cycle, we are confident that the CHESS Wideband will provide Alcatel with world-class technology that reduces power, cost and complexity, improving our time-to-market while reducing service provider costs in next-generation transport networks."
"Transport equipment vendors and service providers are working to preserve existing capital investment while providing new services like Ethernet through incremental upgrades to existing equipment," said Steve Perna, vice president and general manager of PMC-Sierra's Service Provider Division. "The CHESS Wideband addresses these requirements by enabling both new 10/100 Ethernet services and existing T1/E1 services to be cost-effectively managed at the VT/TU granularity."
VT/TU Solution Enables High Reliability for Next Generation Platforms
The CHESS Wideband's TUPP 9953 Tributary Unit Pointer Processor device integrates performance monitoring and bit error rate technology with 10 Gbit/s capacity. The other CHESS Wideband device, the WSE 40, is a 100 percent non-blocking single chip VT/TU cross-connect solution that features Message Assisted Protection Switching (MAPS(TM)) technology. MAPS simplifies system software development by performing protection processing in hardware to meet service failure recovery times required by SONET and SDH standards. The TUPP 9953 and WSE 40 devices utilize PMC-Sierra's high speed serial technology, Rate Agile Serial I/O (RASIO(TM)), for seamless integration into the CHESS family of devices. The CHESS Wideband devices complement PMC-Sierra's CHESS III SONET/SDH family of products to provide a full grooming solution to support data rates from 1.5 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s.
