HP Compaq Selects Broadcom’s NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet for Desktops

6/3/2003 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), the leading provider of silicon solutions enabling broadband communications, announced that Broadcom® NetXtremeTM Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) controllers are now offered by HP as a standard component on select new business desktop PCs. The recently announced HP systems with integrated Broadcom NetXtreme controllers include the HP Compaq business desktop d330 and d530.

“Gigabit Ethernet has become the standard for business relieving the network bottleneck and allowing users to fully utilize the performance of today’s desktop platforms,” said Thomas Lagatta, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Client Server Networking Business Unit. “With the standardization of Broadcom Gigabit client networking technology for business desktops, our customers can capitalize on advanced capabilities Broadcom developed in becoming the leader for server and workstation Gigabit networking.”

“With the Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5782 controller, HP is leading the charge to deliver significant productivity and performance improvements for the business of tomorrow,” said Jeff Groudan, Vice President of Marketing, Business Desktops, Personal Systems Group for HP. “As business networks evolve, HP’s delivery of Gigabit-class technology to more clients on the network will provide customers with the performance and advanced functionality that enables desktop users to reap the benefits of Gigabit technology in their network infrastructure for present and future business PC requirements.”

The BCM5782 controller is part of the Broadcom NetXtreme 570x family and utilizes the same common software drivers that run on existing HP servers, workstations and business notebooks, and now on the new HP Compaq business desktops. The BCM5782 incorporates fifth-generation, field-proven 10/100/1000BASE-T Broadcom technology that combines a triple-speed IEEE 802.3-compliant media access controller (MAC) with a triple-speed Ethernet transceiver (transmitter/receiver), a 32-bit PCI bus interface, and an on-chip buffer memory in a single-chip solution.

The adoption of Broadcom NetXtreme controllers for business clients continues the widespread migration of Broadcom’s Gigabit Ethernet network technology in the enterprise and throughout the business PC market. As the pioneer of GbE integrated circuit technology, Broadcom has led the industry migration from legacy 10/100 Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet in PCs and switching solutions.

Gigabit Ethernet has rapidly become the standard network technology that connects today’s business users and is the next logical step in Ethernet technology. It provides users with an enhanced computing experience that increases network performance and productivity, and reduces CPU utilization and network congestion. Tests conducted by the Ziff-Davis Media Company’s eTesting Labs (www.veritest.com) show that Gigabit Ethernet connections can provide up to a 341% performance and productivity improvement over 10/100 Fast Ethernet connections running everyday business applications on client systems such as e-mail, Web browsing, databases and disk backup.

Broadcom’s Gigabit Ethernet networking product portfolio includes switching solutions, transceivers, security processors and controllers for servers, workstations, desktops and mobile PCs, providing the industry’s most comprehensive portfolio of Gigabit Ethernet solutions. Broadcom’s Gigabit Ethernet solutions are the most widely deployed and field-proven in the industry. The company is now shipping, at an annualized run rate, over 20 million units of NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet controllers per year.

About the Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5782 for HP Compaq Desktop PCs
The Broadcom BCM5782 NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet controller includes advanced enterprise-class functions that are ideally suited for enterprise desktop applications. Featured within the BCM5782 is an integrated graphical user interface (GUI) application called the Broadcom Advanced Control Suite (BACS). This comprehensive software suite allows administrators to obtain status reports on all Local Area Network (LAN) adapters and controllers in the enterprise, confirm network connectivity with remote users, quickly diagnose and rectify nearly all network related problems, and perform an in-depth CAT5 cable characterization analysis. The BACS is designed to operate in 32-bit Windows® operating systems.
