Agilent Develops E-pHEMT MMIC for Base Station LO Buffer Amplifier

5/23/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) introduced an E-pHEMT (enhancement-mode pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility transistor) MMIC (monolithic microwave integrated circuit) specifically designed for the base station LO buffer amplifier application. The Agilent MGA-565P8 simplifies design, as it is the first integrated buffer amplifier capable of replacing the commonly used two-stage buffer amplifier implementation. Its extremely compact package size of 2 mm x 2 mm reduces board space.

Providing up to +20 dBm of saturated output power (Psat) at 0 dBm input power and typical 67mA saturated current draw, with the industry's highest (minimum 42 dB) reverse isolation (at 2 GHz) makes the Agilent MGA-565P8 capable of directly driving the level 17 (+17 dBm LO drive level) high-dynamic range mixers used in most current base station designs. Agilent' E-pHEMT buffer amplifier also features a "smart bias" function, which allows the output power to be adjusted from the maximum + 21 dBm to as low as + 9 dBm by changing a single external resistor. This also makes it suitable to be used as an LO buffer amplifier to drive low cost level 7 mixers that require a minimum +7dBm LO drive.

The Agilent MGA-565P8 provides 22 dB small signal gain, +19 dBm linear output power (at 1 dB gain compression), with typical current consumption of 37 mA at 5 VDC in linear mode. The device is specified for operation at frequencies from 100 MHz to 3.5 GHz, and is suitable for 3V to 5V operation.

The Agilent E-pHEMT buffer amplifier is housed in the compact 2.0 mm x 2.0 mm x 0.75 mm 8-pad industry-standard leadless plastic chip carrier JEDEC DRP-N LPCC (JEDEC Solid State Technology Association) package. The package's lead-free backside metalization provides excellent thermal dissipation as well as visual evidence of solder reflow.

Agilent remains the industry's only supplier of single-voltage E-pHEMT devices.
