IBM Rational Debuts Rapid Developer for Building Scalable J2EE Apps

5/21/2003 - IBM® Rational® introduced IBM Rational Rapid Developer, a new architected rapid application development (ARAD) environment that makes it easier for software developers to build high-quality, scalable JavaTM 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) business applications and reuse and integrate existing software and systems.

To help create a competitive advantage for their companies, IT organizations must build flexible, reliable and scalable business applications that tightly integrate with existing software and systems. Current J2EE standards can provide developers with a technology platform needed to attain these goals. As J2EE proliferates as a software platform, companies building J2EE-based applications are looking for easy-to-use tools to harness its power and flexibility.

"Today's business and technology climate requires software development teams to leverage a wide range of developer skills to deliver business value to their organizations while juggling an increasingly complex array of applications and technologies," said Thomas Murphy, senior program director at META Group. "J2EE development can be complex and organizations have been challenged in migrating developers to the platform. Tools that reduce these barriers and provide increased productivity are critical to the ongoing success of the J2EE platform."

IBM Rational has introduced a new solution that helps meet this market need for easy-to-use J2EE development tools. IBM Rational Rapid Developer makes the power of J2EE available to a broad community of developers by offering a visual, model-driven environment that can insulate developers from many J2EE complexities.

Unlike rapid application development tools of the past, the visual modeling environment within IBM Rational Rapid Developer enables developers to build applications that have a strong underlying architecture, making it easier to build high-quality, standards-based applications that can scale to help meet the needs of the organization.

Organizations can use IBM Rational Rapid Developer to build and deploy new applications as well as help extend the life of previous software investments by integrating with existing data, applications, and other IT assets.

IBM Rational Rapid Developer leverages IBM Rational's full lifecycle of software development solutions, including integration with IBM Rational ClearCase®, IBM Rational XDE® Developer, and IBM Rational Rose®. Applications created with IBM Rational Rapid Developer can be tested using IBM Rational XDE Tester. A new IBM Rational Unified Process® (RUP®) Plug-In for IBM Rational Rapid Developer has also been announced.

Rational Rapid Developer supports automated application construction and deployment for a broad range of technology platforms, including leading application servers from IBM, BEA, and Oracle and databases from IBM, Oracle and other companies. It provides automated construction to IBM WebSphere® Application Server 5.0 and earlier versions, integrated debugging using an IBM WebSphere Studio Plug-in, and messaging support for IBM WebSphere MQ, as well as comprehensive support for IBM DB2®.

"With the challenges faced by businesses today, it is essential for IT organizations to create business applications that adapt quickly to changing business needs, capture and maintain a strategic advantage, and are reliable and scalable," said Mike Devlin, general manager, Rational software, IBM Software Group. "By enabling developers of a variety of skill-levels to create applications that support an on demand enterprise, IBM Rational Rapid Developer empowers organizations to enhance their software development capability and fundamentally help improve their ability to succeed in an on demand world."

In addition to this new ARAD solution, IBM Rational has also announced IBM Rational XDE Tester, a new test automation solution, new versions of IBM Rational XDE Developer, IBM Rational Suite®, IBM Rational ClearCase, and IBM Rational Unified Process.
