5/14/2003 - Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS), announced that its CS98100 DVD processor and CS4340 digital-to-analog converter (DAC) chips are powering CyberHome’s new line of portable DVD players, the CH-LDV 712 and CH-LDV 702. Portable DVD players are a fast-growing segment of the DVD market, further extending the DVD boom and giving consumers the ability to enjoy their favorite DVD movies, music and special events while on the go. Michelle Abraham, senior analyst for In-Stat/MDR, estimates lower prices and consumers’ desire to enjoy DVD content beyond the living room will continue to expand the market for portable DVD players. Abraham forecasts that sales for portable DVD players will rise from slightly more than two million units in 2002 to 5.8 million units by 2006 (source: In-Stat/MDR, December 2002).
The CyberHome portable players feature a seven-inch 16:9 widescreen monitor, progressive scan video output, support for CD and MP3 media, and a Cirrus CS4340 96 kHz/24-bit DAC for high-quality sound. The ultra-low power of the CS98100 affords the new portable players the ability to provide up to four hours of playback, about the length of two typical DVD movies. The products have an estimated retail cost of $349 and will soon be available at RadioShack dealers in North America. Cirrus’ DVD chipsets, which also include solutions for DVD players, DVD recorders, digital video recorders and DVD receivers, are helping manufacturers like CyberHome extend consumers’ options for enjoying their digital entertainment content.
“We have selected Cirrus to help us grow our DVD portable market position primarily because their CS98100 DVD processor and CS4340 converter provide exceptional video and audio solutions to distinguish our products to the consumer,” said Tin Wu, president and CEO, CyberHome. “Cirrus is already a valuable provider for our DVD players, and I’m pleased to extend our relationship to the portable DVD market.”
“We’re delighted to help CyberHome leverage our existing relationship in the DVD player market and grow their position in this fast-growing, portable segment of digital entertainment,” said Terry Leeder, senior vice president, Cirrus. “This design win underscores our growing presence as a leading supplier of DVD solutions, for both video and audio.”
