5/12/2003 - Oak Technology, Inc., (Nasdaq: OAKT) a leading provider of embedded solutions for the digital imaging markets and digital home entertainment markets, announced that its printer integrated solution, the OTI-4110, PM-1100 and Printer Drivers, has been designed into Hewlett-Packard's new Color LaserJet 1500 printer series. The Color LaserJet 1500 is a lower priced follow-on to the groundbreaking Color LaserJet 2500, one of the first color laser printers to be priced below $1,000. The Color LaserJet 1500 is positioned to assure that color laser printing is affordable for the desktop. The inclusion of Oak's printer solution in the Color LaserJet 1500 follows a broad industry trend toward building more affordable personal color laser printers. Furthermore, this design-win at HP significantly contributes to Oak's further penetration of the personal color printer market.
HP's Color LaserJet 1500 is a host-based printer, in which the PC printer driver renders each page to a raster image, compresses it and sends it via USB to the printer. Oak's low-cost printer controller solution is comprised of three distinct products. The first is the OTI-4110. It is a programmable system-on-a-chip (SOC) solution based on Oak's QuatroTM architecture for imaging and printing appliances. The OTI-4110 incorporates an ARM9TM CPU core and Quatro DSP core and provides OEMs like Hewlett-Packard with a powerful, highly integrated SOC solution that performs all the control processing, image processing and communications processing required in a personal imaging or printing appliance. The OTI-4110 is one of the industry's first SOCs to incorporate a complete USB 2.0 device interface to provide both Hi-Speed (480 Mbps) and Full-Speed (12 Mbps) transfer rates. The new Hi-Speed mode in USB 2.0 allows it to transfer at a rate up to 40 times faster than the maximum transfer rate of its predecessor USB 1.1.
The second is Oak's PM-1100, a high-precision digital pulse width modulator and frequency synthesizer for laser printing devices. The patented technology in the PM-1100 provides high-precision placement and sizing of individual pixels in laser-generated output pages, enabling superior image quality for the monochrome and growing color laser printing markets.
The third component is Oak's raster-based high performance Printer Drivers. They support Microsoft® Windows® Operating Systems: 98/Me, 2000/XP, and Mac OS/9 and OS X. The 32-bit Windows drivers are the first deployment of drivers developed using the Oak UniDRV extension technology and are certified by Microsoft. The 32-bit platform extends the Microsoft UniDRV printer driver with an extensive set of features and a full custom user interface.
"Hewlett-Packard's Color LaserJet 1500 is a highly anticipated new product that brings an affordable, HP quality color desktop printer to the SOHO market. Our selection of Oak's comprehensive technology allowed HP to meet an aggressive product development cycle while still providing advanced features like USB 2.0," said NorRae Spohn, vice president and general manager, Personal LaserJet Solutions group, Hewlett Packard.
"HP's Color LaserJet 1500 represents Oak's first shipping design of the OTI-4110 and PM-1100. Our technology is perfectly suited to meet the needs of the low-cost personal color laser printer environment by offering quality and performance," said Simon Dolan, senior vice president and general manager, Oak Technology Imaging Group. He added, "We are very proud to have HP as a lead customer."
