5/12/2003 - W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc., a leading provider of high data rate digital cable assemblies, and ERNI Elektroapparate GmbH combine their technologies to deliver the telecommunications, computing, and automatic test equipment markets with a high data rate digital cable assembly for today's most demanding digital interconnection applications. The new cable assembly combines Gore's high data rate digital cable with ERNI's ERmet ZDTM high-speed connector to offer a high performing interconnect that delivers high data rate signals farther and in smaller cables with exceptional signal fidelity and reliability.
"We are pleased to join forces with ERNI to develop a high performing digital cable assembly that can provide 400 Gbps (5 Gbps/channel) and higher of data transmission into 50 linear millimeters of backplane space," states David Gioconda, global product manager for Gore. "By combining ERNI's wealth of connector knowledge and experience with our years of experience in cable design and termination, we can better meet the needs of our customers."
"Our customers expect excellent products and service," said Andreas Scheck, chief marketing officer of the ERNI Group. "The ERmet ZDTM ERNI/Gore solution combines the know-how of two technology leaders with a strong emphasis on product reliability. The new cable connectors are designed with the ERNI Type 6TM contact that ensures optimal electrical performance," continued Scheck. "The new cable assemblies will expand our line of high speed backplane and systems solutions."
The cable assembly uses Gore's expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) as the dielectric core for the digital interconnect cables. The helically wrapped ePTFE core ensures constant impedance throughout the entire length of the cables, regardless of how much they're flexed. Their smaller diameter and minimum bend radius, combined with the low dielectric constant materials, allows more signal lines per area and delivers higher bandwidth performance consistently than other comparable cable configurations.
Through the use of Gore's unique material, precision manufacturing and innovative design, the cable assemblies offer the best and most consistent combination of low signal loss, low crosstalk, low skew, controlled capacitance, and controlled impedance. By optimizing these properties, the assemblies provide the most open eye patterns available at this density.
The ERmet ZDTM connectors are offered in 25 mm modules with the following configurations: 4 pair versions with 4 pairs per column (40 signal channels), 3 pair versions, which are compatible to ERmet 10 row (2mm HM with 8 signal contact rows), with 3 pairs per column (30 signal channels), and 2 pair versions, which are compatible to ERmet 7 row (2mm HM with 5 signal contact rows), with 2 pairs per column (20 signal channels). Pre-centering pins of the housing and the L-shaped shield contacts on the male side assist secure mating and provide effective protection against damage.
