5/1/2003 - Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) announced that its StratixTM device family, winner of EDN magazine's 2003 Product of the Year award, has achieved widespread acceptance across a broad spectrum of customers and end markets. Key factors contributing to the success of the industry's fastest, most powerful FPGAs include its exceptional customer-defined feature set, its solid record of on-time delivery and reliable production shipments, and the low-risk, high-reward alternative it presents versus ASICs. Unique features in the Stratix family fulfill critical needs across several markets, enabling Altera to provide a general-purpose, yet performance-oriented programmable solution.
"We at Siemens ICN chose Stratix FPGAs because they offer a combination of significant DSP capabilities and a large amount of internal memory," said Jens Tiedemann, director FPGA design at Siemens Information and Communication Networks, Inc. "Also, Altera has done an impressive job of meeting their announced delivery dates for this family."
"Stratix FPGAs have been key to our ability to demonstrate our real-time, large-kernel image enhancement technology targeted for consumer electronics applications," stated Terry Coleman, ASIC development manager at Digivision. "The high-speed DSP blocks and generously-sized memories in Stratix devices have enabled our design to run at 100 MHz, which is well over our requirements. By shortening our design cycles and reducing our development time, Stratix devices are fulfilling the promise of programmable logic, allowing us to offer our technology for improving image quality and lowering costs for manufacturers of standard and high-definition TVs, DVD players, and set-top boxes."
"Unique features in Altera's Stratix family, such as clock switchover and dynamic PLL reconfiguration fit our network synchronization applications perfectly by allowing us to use redundant functions to achieve high reliability," noted Roberto Teodori, senior hardware designer at Ericsson Lab Italy.
Teodori's colleague, Osvoldo Simonelli, also a senior hardware designer at Ericsson Lab Italy added, "In our packet-oriented applications, we need lots of memory buffers, as well as memories with a large data width to implement complex state machines. The Stratix EP1S80 devices we have received meet this need by offering a wide range of useful memory structures on a single chip."
The success of the Stratix family is a reflection of the extensive customer involvement that Altera sought during the family's development. Altera's product planning organization performed exhaustive customer research to determine the ideal set of characteristics for the device family. The resulting device presents users with a valuable opportunity to bring significant innovation to their end markets and increase their products' competitive advantage.
"Stratix devices are gaining widespread adoption in many areas, including storage networking, communications, broadcasting, digital consumer products, and industrial automation," remarked Tim Colleran, vice president of product marketing at Altera. "We have developed a solid product based on close interaction with our customers, and are keeping our commitments to meet customer demand with on-time deliveries. With 10 all-copper, 0.13-micron devices available and in full production, customers know that they can count on Altera."
About the Stratix Device Family
The Stratix device family is the industry's first family of production-qualified FPGAs built on a 0.13-micron, all-layer copper process. Featuring embedded DSP blocks, embedded RAM blocks, and support for leading edge and emerging I/O standards, the Stratix device family gives designers the performance and densities they need to meet the challenges of high-bandwidth system design.
