Networked Automobiles Built with OSE Automotive Gateway, RTOS

4/30/2003 - OSE Systems is showing its new solution for the telematics market in the USA for the first time at the Telematics Update, Detroit, April 29th and 30th 2003. The Swedish company’s OSE Automotive Gateway enables the building of intelligent switching nodes for handling all of an automobile’s control signals. OSE Automotive Gateway uses OSE’s Real Time Operating System for general purpose and digital signal processors. Information gathered from all around the vehicle is processed in the one platform, so that what were once island solutions are expected to merge into each other. Combining navigation, communication and driver information systems, can mean that OSE Automotive Gateway makes for a significantly more efficient and less expensive package.

“Until today there has generally been a different Operating System inside each Infotainment device”, explains Vance Hilderman, vice president of OSE Systems North America. “To drive costs down, future dashboards, navigation systems, car radios, even full multimedia systems will be built around one Communications Gateway per car, pulling together all of the datastreams and feeds. Our Operating Systems were purpose built for communications, and provides an outstanding platform.”

The OSE Automotive Gateway can be used to build Communication Gateways that process, manage and interconnect all the data flows of on-board networks like CAN, MOST, Bluetooth-MOST as well as external services (emergency calls via GSM, OSGi). OSE Automotive Gateway supports all current hardware architectures and software standards, whether from OSE or from third party suppliers.

OSE Automotive Gateway includes advanced Dynamic Runtime Program Loading. Software updates and new versions can be installed in situ without hassle. Memory Protection and special Memory Management features prevent memory fragmentation and unintended interactions between concurrently-running programs. The memory protection can also save on RAM by using lower cost FLASH memory whenever possible. Further important features are Flash support, and energy savings through efficent Power Management.

OSE Automotive Gateway is built using the robust, scalable OSE Real Time Operating System (RTOS) for 32-bit processors. The OSE Kernel is compact, modular and configurable so as to save on memory. The basic module requires between 60 and 150 kB. A fully populated configuration, including all available components could take this up to about 700 kB. OSE ensures that all real-time specifications can be tightly met. Because of its modular construction the Operating System can be scaled for use in a wide variety of vehicle types.

OSE Automotive Gateway elegantly supports multi-processor setups involving both General Purpose- and Digital Signal Processors such as those found in automotive hands-free voice controls. The OSE Link Handler manages messaging and linking for the OSEck RTOS for DSPs. The developer’s task is simplified because both Operating Systems use a common API (Application Programmer’s Interface). Debugging can be done while multiple processors are running. OSEck is optimised to deliver powerful applications with smallest possible memory footprints, for DSPs and Multi-core DSPs. For a system offering lots of functionality, excellent performance and tight timing, OSEck has an extremely small memory footprint. The pre-emptive Kernel delivers low interrupt latency times and high data throughput.

Graphic solutions for the OSE Automotive Gateway can be fully integrated by using partner products such as the Portable Embedded GUI (PEG) from Swellsoftware. Additional features like Email, WEB- and WAP-Browsers are also available. Another interesting element is the J9 (J2ME Compatible) Java Virtual Machine, from OTI. This permits the use of OSGi managed broadband services. OSGi (as a service gateway) is a server embedded in the vehicle network, allowing the OSE OS to link to external Internet Service Providers via an open standard.
