Agilent Launches Three Bipolar Darlington RFIC Gain Block Amplifiers

4/30/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) announced three economical and easy-to-use general purpose silicon bipolar Darlington RFIC gain block amplifiers, in the compact SOT-343 surface-mount package, for use at up to 2.5 GHz.

Agilent's ADA-4x43 series RFIC amplifiers are primarily targeted as IF (intermediate frequency) and buffer amplifiers for applications such as GSM/CDMA base station radio cards, direct broadcast satellite downconverters, cable television, microwave links, fiber optic systems and cable modems. They are also useful for many other applications requiring high gain and dynamic range, flat frequency response and single-supply operation.

These RFIC Darlington amplifiers are unconditionally stable with excellent gain flatness, high linearity, and internal 50-ohm matching circuitry to minimize the required number of external components. The devices operate from a single current source and meet most output power and dynamic range requirements for IF and buffer amplifier applications in communications systems.

At 900 MHz, the Agilent ADA-4543 features 15.1 dB gain, +1.9 dBm linear output power (P1dB), +15.0 dB output third-order intercept point (OIP3) and 3.7 dB noise figure. For the ADA-4643, the specifications are 17 dB gain, +13.4 dBm P1dB, +28.3 dB OIP3 and 4 dB noise figure, and for the ADA-4743 16.5 dB, +17.1 dBm, +32.6 dBm and 4.2 dB, respectively. Their Darlington feedback structure provides inherent broad bandwidth performance with 3 dB bandwidths ranging from 3.2 to 4.0 GHz, and internal matching assures input and output VSWRs less than 2:1 over the full operating frequency range.

ADA-4x43 devices are fabricated using Agilent's HP25 silicon bipolar technology, which employs a double-diffused single polysilicon process with self-aligned submicron emitter geometry. The process is capable of simultaneous high transfer frequency (fT) and high NPN breakdown (25 GHz fT at 6 V BVCEO). The process utilizes industry standard device oxide isolation technologies and submicron aluminum multilayer interconnect to achieve superior performance, high uniformity and proven reliability.
