4/28/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) announced that Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) has purchased the Agilent 93000 SOC Series test system to serve its China-based fabless semiconductor customers.
SMIC's new Agilent 93000 is a flexible test platform that enables the company to test a variety of its fabless customers' devices on a single platform. The system's upgradeable architecture allows it to adapt to a broader range of applications, thereby improving system utilization, and reducing SMIC's overall capital investment. The Agilent 93000's upgradeable system architecture also enables users to add memory, increase speed and raise test reliability over time, improving the tester lifespan.
"The Agilent 93000 SOC Series' scalability and wide application coverage allow us to meet the diverse test requirements of our many fabless customers," said D.S. Yan, director of Testing Division in SMIC. "In addition, the professional service and support of the Agilent China team helps us provide better test program development and production test services to our local and worldwide customers."
According to CCID Consulting data(1), China's IC design market has progressed from traditional low-grade product to middle and high-end functionality -- including CPUs, communication baseband chips and ICs for digital consumer applications -- with continuous improvements in product technology and specialized channels and services. In 2002, China's total design output was valued at $263 million (2.16 billion Yuan)(1), with digital consumer electronic products and computer peripheral equipment driving growth.
"As the number of fabless semiconductor companies in China continues to grow, the task of testing their ICs is becoming more challenging," said Paul Yang, general manager of Agilent's Semiconductor Test Equipment Group in China. "Agilent is dedicated to supporting SMIC with versatile, low-cost test solutions. Our products, and experienced service and support team, will give SMIC the test performance and knowledge it needs to excel as its customers' needs grow."
