4/25/2003 - NMS Communications (Nasdaq: NMSS), trusted supplier of communications products and services, is furnishing the carrier-grade telephony platform for SkyWave's new SkyGate II, the company's first SIP-based Voice over IP (VoIP) gateway. SkyGate II makes possible smooth communication among heterogeneous communication devices such as PCs, wireline and wireless phones, and personal digital assistants (PDAs) across any Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based networks, whether they are 3G, Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), or IP.
NMS' Convergence Generation (CG) 6000™ C features the essential elements for the SkyGate II – it is a scalable, high-performance CompactPCI development platform for converged PSTN and IP telephony solutions. As a result, it provides the connectivity, flexibility, and performance needed for new applications such as SIP-based VoIP gateways. The CompactPCI support enables "hot swap" board removal and replacement, making it a highly reliable platform ideal for in-network deployments.
"Having worked with NMS for some time, we trust them to offer platforms with the best density and scalability in the industry, which translates into the most flexible and robust solutions," said Yoshinobu Nakamura, executive director of VoIP Products, SkyWave, Inc. "And it was easy to deploy NMS' CG 6000C platform for our SkyGate II, as NMS uses a consistent development environment across all of their products."
Developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), SIP is a signaling protocol for real-time communications on the Internet, including VoIP calling. In addition, the 3G Partnership Project (3GPP) has selected SIP as the call control standard, making it an important protocol for next-generation wireless services such as multimedia messaging services (MMS) that span fixed and mobile networks.
