Sun Introduces Crypto Accelerator Boards for Seamless Network Security

4/16/2003 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. unveils two new Sun Crypto Accelerator (SCA) boards -- the SCA 500 and SCA 4000 -- designed to deliver seamless network security and increased availability at industry leading price performance.

Sun's new hardware cryptography solution spans the enterprise to help ensure maximum data protection without slowing down system throughput. Sun's new SCA 4000 board offers the industry's leading performance at the lowest price for FIPS encryption offerings.*

"IT managers need fast, secure cryptography solutions in two key areas," said Andy Ingram, vice president, Processors and Networking Products, Sun Microsystems. "VPN/IPsec to transfer data between locations and SSL for secure web transactions and communications, Internet/Intranet portals and encrypted email. The SCA 4000 extends our crypto family and enhances the performance of Sun's secure applications, including the Solaris Operating System, allowing Sun to deliver a full spectrum of industry leading secure solutions. Customers can turn to Sun for cost-effective, high-performance security solutions with the peace of mind of knowing they are based on open standards and meet security certification requirements."

The SCA 4000 board is the first crypto accelerator board to achieve an industry leading session establishment rate of 4300 operations/second and designed for FIPS 140 -- 2 level 3 certification, required by many on-line financial, banking, and government applications.

Sun's crypto product family now includes:

  • Sun Crypto Accelerator 500 (daughter board): Offloads and accelerates SSL for the Sun Fire V210 and V240 servers
  • Sun Crypto Accelerator 1000 (PCI board): Offloads and accelerates SSL for UltraSPARC(r) processor-based systems from the Sun Fire V120 to 6800 servers.
  • Sun Crypto Accelerator 4000 (PCI board): Offloads and accelerates SSL and IPsec for UltraSPARC processor-based systems from the Sun Fire V120 to 6800 servers and is designed to provide FIPS 140-2 level 3 certification.
  • Sun Fire B10p and B15p SSL Proxy Blades: Offloads and accelerates SSL for the Sun Fire Blade platform (due out later this year).

The Sun Crypto Accelerator 4000 board is priced at $4,200 U.S. and the Sun Crypto Accelerator 500 board is priced at $695 U.S. Both will be available in 2Q2003. More information on the Sun's entire Cryptography product line can be found at: www.sun.com/networking.

* FIPS certification testing is scheduled to be completed in August 2003.
