4/15/2003 - Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), the global leader in IP storage networking, announced that its IP Storage ASIC technology has been integrated into the FCIP (Fibre Channel over IP) Port Adapter for the Cisco 7200 and Cisco 7400 Series routers. The full TCP/IP offload ASIC-based solution will enable Cisco Systems customers to connect disparate Fibre Channel SANs (Storage Area Networks) over TCP/IP networks.
Adaptec and Cisco Systems have been working together on IP storage initiatives for more than a year and last year launched an initiative to test and market solutions combining Adaptec's ASIC-based storage networking technology and the Cisco SN 5400 Storage Routers.
"Full TCP/IP offload is a requirement for SAN-to-SAN connectivity over wide-area networks," said Ram Jayam, vice president and general manager of Adaptec's Storage Networking Group. "This launch demonstrates the capability of Adaptec's IP Storage technology to support enterprise-scale storage network deployments."
"IP storage networking technologies enable customers to cost effectively expand their reach of SANs, delivering benefits such as connectivity to midrange servers and applications and enhanced business continuity," said Ed Chapman, senior director of product marketing for the Storage Technology Group at Cisco. "Consistent with our overall product development strategy, Cisco will combine our own IP storage networking innovations with those of industry leaders such as Adaptec to offer customers the best available solution in the market."
"FCIP effectively utilizes IP infrastructure to extend Fibre Channel SANs beyond the reach of native Fibre Channel," said James Opfer, research vice president with Gartner Dataquest. "TCP/IP offload with hardware acceleration is essential to enable a high performance extension link."
Adaptec's TCP/IP offload technology is the core of its IP storage networking initiatives, and is incorporated into its ASIC and host adapter solutions for storage networking, ranging from iSCSI connectivity to network acceleration. The technology is being evaluated by several OEMs and is currently in early deployment with end users.
About the Cisco 7200/7400 Series Routers
The Cisco Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) Port Adapters for the Cisco 7200 and Cisco 7400 Series routers are designed for customers who have already deployed multiple Fibre Channel SANs and need FCIP to interconnect these SANs over long distances securely and reliably. It uses the industry standard version of the FCIP protocol to deliver connectivity between these data center SANs over a WAN infrastructure at speeds as low as fractional T1 up to OC3 (155 megabits per second [Mbps]).
Adaptec Inc. (NASDAQ:ADPT) provides highly available storage access solutions that reliably move, manage and protect critical data and digital content. Adaptec's storage solutions are found in high-performance networks, servers, workstations and desktops from the world's leading manufacturers, and are sold through OEMs and distribution channels to ISPs, enterprises, medium and small businesses and consumers. Adaptec is an S&P SmallCap 600 Index member.
