4/8/2003 - Performance Technologies (Nasdaq NM: PTIX) announced that UTStarcom, a leading provider of wireless, wireline and broadband access equipment, is using the Performance Technologies High Availability Processor Module in its IP-based Personal Access Systems (iPASTM).
UTStarcom's highly successful iPAS systems, utilizing the company’s mSwitch softswitch platform, allow operators to migrate current wireline networks to IP-based wireless networks. Leveraging a micro-cell topology, iPAS supports incredible subscriber density and provides high quality wireless voice, data and Internet services to high-demand urban or suburban areas. Once installed, iPAS operators can offer services such as citywide mobility, same-number wireless extension, e-mail and mobile Internet access, which would otherwise not be available with a traditional wireline infrastructure.
Key to the success of the iPAS platform is the ability to minimize service interruptions for customers. To meet these needs, UTStarcom relies upon Performance Technologies’ ZT 5550 CompactPCI® High Availability Processor Module. When used in a dual redundant configuration, the ZT 5550 can provide 99.999 percent (five-nines) availability, which equates to just over five minutes of down time per year.
With deployments in China, Taiwan, Vietnam and soon to be in the United States, UTStarcom dominated the worldwide PAS market last year with over 23 million lines of capacity installed worldwide. In addition to its leadership in PAS, UTStarcom also earned the top spot in the worldwide softswitch market in the second and third quarters of last year, according to Infonetics Research, and it rated second in the DSLAM sector, according to Synergy Research - both key technology areas in high-growth markets.
