The MathWorks Powers Los Angeles Capital Management's Portfolio

4/8/2003 - The MathWorks announced that Los Angeles Capital Management, an equity investment firm with $2 billion under management, is using MATLAB® and MATLAB Excel Builder as part of its technology platform to select and optimize portfolio content. Los Angeles Capital Management has implemented MATLAB, The MathWorks flagship software, to optimize trading models, perform advanced analysis of portfolios, and cut significant time from the coding process. MATLAB also enables the investment firm to analyze and model portfolio data for operational decisions such as trading or buying stocks.

"Using MATLAB, we can shorten model run time and deploy applications easily," said Michael Paschal, director of information technology, Los Angeles Capital Management. "The same tasks that required a week to complete in C, we can now accomplish in a day by working with MATLAB. My team is able to focus on the problem at hand, instead of arcane code."

By integrating MATLAB within its trading process, Los Angeles Capital Management staff can retrieve and model information from optimized portfolios easily. Furthermore, the software empowers users to visualize their data, as well as to develop algorithms, in a fraction of the time associated with other legacy applications, such as C, Visual Basic, and Fortran.

Los Angeles Capital Management also implemented MATLAB Excel Builder, which enables users to convert MATLAB algorithms into independent Excel Add-ins. As a result, the firm's staff can leverage the MATLAB programming environment to develop computationally intensive models without requiring direct access to MATLAB from their desktops. Using Excel Builder also allows company executives to query specific data from MATLAB for analysis of the firm's achievements, progress, and results.

"As a leading investment firm, it is critical that Los Angeles Capital Management be able to create modeling applications and study large amounts of portfolio data efficiently and effectively," said Richard Rovner, vice president of marketing, The MathWorks. "MATLAB provides Los Angeles Capital Management with a powerful environment for financial modeling and analysis. The ease of application deployment makes it an ideal platform for developing MATLAB based analysis and algorithms."

Investment firms such as Los Angeles Capital Management rely on technical computing software that enables them to assess portfolio content and establish buy or sell options more efficiently. MATLAB combines the mathematical computing, advanced visualization, and powerful programming language that Los Angeles Capital Management needs for a robust environment for modeling and analysis of financial data.
