4/2/2003 - IDTTM (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.; Nasdaq: IDTI), a leading communications IC company, announced that it has expanded its portfolio of FIFO products with the addition of low-cost multimedia devices targeted primarily at consumer applications, such as HDTV or VCR products storing multimedia data. In addition to providing designers with FIFO functionality, the IDT multimedia FIFOs allow designers to adjust clock rates between processing elements, such as application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), digital signal processors (DSPs) or microprocessors. In addition, designers are able to monitor the status of the devices by way of its programmable flag output functionality, including almost-empty, empty, half-full, almost-full or full flags. By utilizing the new IDT multimedia devices, designers can now use discrete FIFO products instead of integrated solutions, enabling them to save cost and valuable engineering time for implementing and debugging an integrated FIFO function.
The IDT multimedia FIFOs provide an ideal solution for consumer applications, as well as the communications and instrumentation markets, due to their low cost and functionality benefits. Major requirements of these markets include system bandwidth, packet latency, port density and quality of service, all of which are affected by a system’s approach to buffering and flow management. How and where FIFOs are implemented in the hardware design have major effects on these approaches. The IDT multimedia FIFOs support very high data rates and provide system designers with the ideal building blocks for handling data-path and/or control-path buffering tasks. In addition, the devices allow designers to increase system bandwidth without compromising board space or performance and without driving up component count.
“The introduction of our multimedia FIFOs is in line with our ongoing effort to identify and satisfy market needs, while saving customers time and money,” said Michael Olsen, director of strategic marketing for the IDT FIFO division. “Many multimedia applications today require FIFO functions. However, due to heavy cost constraints, customers are addressing this by designing the functions themselves using discrete components or other devices that take extra design time and board space. With the IDT multimedia FIFOs, designers are able to cost-effectively transfer data utilizing a device that includes an appropriate set of features, with no additional requirements from the user.”
The IDT multimedia FIFOs are available in densities ranging from 2 Kbit (256 bits x 8) to 1 Mbit (32K bits x 32). At 3.3 volts, the devices consume extremely low power and are tolerant of 5-volt inputs. They exhibit a dramatic reduction in supply current at only 35mA for the x16 versions. In addition to the TQFP packages, the devices offer a BGA package option with a JTAG interface, enabling designers to debug and test the IDT multimedia FIFOs and other components on the board for optimized manufacturing and board yields. The BGA package can save up to 40 percent board space compared to industry standard TQFP packages.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing for the IDT multimedia FIFOs starts at $2.95 in 50,000-unit quantities. These products are available now in production quantities.
