4/1/2003 - Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) announced that Korean-based Teleview, a leading producer of video products for the global professional high-definition television (HDTV) market, is using StratixTM FPGAs and MAX® 3000A CPLDs in its HDTV receiver and digital television (DTV) products. Teleview became the first adopter of Stratix devices in Korea when Teleview began their development for the device early last year. The Altera® solution delivered the optimal blend of density, memory, speed, and configurability that Teleview needed to build the high-end systems required by their professional broadcasting customers, as well as the flexibility required to respond to changing digital and HDTV industry standards.
"We chose Altera because Stratix devices were the only FPGAs that provided us with the right combination of high-end digital signal processing (DSP) and memory capabilities for HDTV applications," said Yim Jaewon, president of Teleview. "Also, Altera's tools and support enabled us to quickly design and bring to market our new products while minimizing development risks."
The conversion from analog to digital television broadcasting is underway in many countries, with ambitious government timelines driving the rapid transition to a digital broadcasting infrastructure. As in any transition to a new technology, those companies that are first to deliver the viable products required to build that infrastructure will be the ones who dominate the market. At the same time, these companies are faced with developing new products in an atmosphere of evolving industry standards and cost pressures. Altera's programmable solutions, which offer a highly cost-effective and flexible path to speed the design process and reduce time-to-market, are being used to provide image modulation and demodulation functions in digital and HDTV systems that are already in use at one of Korea's largest broadcasting stations.
"Teleview is a top provider of systems to the digital television market, as well as a new customer, making this a very significant win for Altera," said Todd Scott, director of the Consumer Applications Business Unit at Altera. "Our ongoing relationship with Teleview reinforces our position as the leading supplier of programmable logic for digital and HDTV applications."
The Teleview HDTV products that incorporate Altera's Stratix FPGAs will be demonstrated at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference in Las Vegas this April.
About Stratix Devices
Stratix devices are based on a 1.5-V, 0.13-micron all-layer-copper SRAM process, with densities ranging from 10,570 to 79,040 logic elements (LEs) and up to 7 Mbits of RAM. Stratix devices offer up to 22 DSP blocks with up to 176 embedded multipliers, optimized for DSP applications that require intensive data processing. Stratix devices support various differential I/O electrical standards such as the LVDS, LVPECL, PCML, and HyperTransportTM standards as well as high-speed interfaces including the UTOPIA IV, SPI-4 Phase 2, SFI-4, 10G Ethernet XSBI, RapidIOTM, HyperTransport, and other interfaces. Stratix devices also offer a complete clock management solution with their hierarchical clock structure and up to 12 phase-locked loops (PLLs).
