TimeSys Offers Royalty-free Linux for Dy 4 Systems' Rugged 181 SBC

3/31/2003 - TimeSys Corporation announced that it has delivered the first real-time Linux(R) software development kit (SDK) for Dy 4 Systems' high performance SVME/DMV-181 single board computer (SBC) providing a complete hardware and software solution for speeding time to market and reducing development costs for rugged avionics, tactical ground vehicle, and naval applications. The TimeSys Linux SDK for Dy 4's SVME/DMV-181 SBC is a certified Linux development environment including a full Linux distribution with kernel enhancements and performance modules that make TimeSys Linux a true real-time operating system (RTOS). The TimeSys SDK provides seamless integration with TimeSys' development, modeling and tracing tools, and has been extensively tested to provide complete confidence to OEMs requiring a solid Linux solution.

"With the TimeSys Linux SDK for our SVME/DMV-181, we are providing military and aerospace systems developers with a complete package combining full Linux functionality with RTOS performance in a single Linux kernel," said Stewart Dewar, Dy 4 Systems product marketing manager. "This hardware/software solution will provide a flexible, high performance environment for the development of a wide range of ruggedized systems."

TimeSys Linux is the only single Linux kernel RTOS that provides a complete package for application development for the Dy 4 SVME/DMV-181 SBC. The TimeSys Linux kernel is fully preemptible to provide complete control over system processes through priority schedulable interrupt and softIRQ (bottom half) handlers, and a much wider range of process priorities than generic Linux. Optional TimeSys Linux/Real-Time extensions provide a royalty-free RTOS capable of task response times as low as 3 microseconds, with a maximum of 32 microseconds on a loaded SVME/DMV-181. Additionally, TimeSys' Reservations modules guarantee application performance under dynamic loads by ensuring that specific resources are always available to critical tasks. All of these performance modules run directly within the Linux kernel, eliminating the need for a separate real-time microkernel or compatible APIs to run Linux applications.

TimeSys Linux provides developers with a royalty-free, open source solution for reducing development time and costs. The TimeSys Linux SDK for the SVME/DMV-181 provides complete support to the edge of the board, with certified drivers for all I/O interfaces and subsystems of the board, enabling developers to begin working on their application within minutes. TimeSys Linux is a full Linux distribution and comes with complete source code for the GPL kernel, enabling developers to reconfigure Linux subsystems to meet the requirements of their SVME/DMV-181 applications.

"Our Linux SDK for the 181 solves the problem of achieving true real-time performance while gaining all of the benefits of Linux development," said TimeSys CEO Larry Weidman. "Our SDK will save developers time and money by providing a royalty-free Linux RTOS with a complete tool suite that is ready to run right out of the box."

The SVME/DMV-181 SBC is one of Dy 4 Systems' high performance VME boards. Based on the 500MHz PowerPC(TM) 7410 processor with AltiVec(TM) technology, the SVME/DMV-181 SBC offers powerful processing capability and an industry-leading set of I/O devices including six serial interfaces, dual Fast Ethernets, and two USB ports. Jam-packed with features to satisfy the real-world requirements of defense/aerospace systems integrators around the globe, the SVME/DMV-181 is designed for performance, reliability and ease of use.
