Compuware Supports J2EE, MDA with Latest OptimalJ Development Tool

3/26/2003 - Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR) announced the availability of Compuware OptimalJ 2.2, an enterprise application development environment for organizations that are adopting J2EE standards and Object Management Group’s (OMG) Model Driven Architecture (MDA) to accelerate application development. OptimalJ 2.2 enhancements offer organizations a competitive edge in application development, integration and maintenance including simplifying the integration of a wide range of technologies such as CORBA, Java, CICS COBOL applications and Web Services.

OptimalJ 2.2 provides organizations that are adopting J2EE a way to accelerate the development, integration and maintenance of their applications because it fully implements the MDA, by using patterns to automatically translate business models into working applications. Because it has fully implemented MDA, OptimalJ is a business strategy success tool that enables organizations to rapidly respond to change, increase development efficiency and dramatically decrease maintenance costs.

“As initiatives like MDA increase in popularity within large enterprises, especially among companies that have a formal architecture in place, the adoption and use of MDA-related tools is growing at a much more rapid pace,” according to John Meyer, Senior Industry Analyst, Application Development, Giga Information Group. “Companies that want to maintain or increase their future competitive edge will need to begin evaluating, planning for and migrating development staff to these more efficient forms of development.”

Designers and developers can create a Web Service using OptimalJ by simply elevating a generated Session Bean to a Web Service. As a result, OptimalJ will automatically generate a Web Service Definition Language (WSDL) file that other applications can use to invoke the new Web Service. For existing Web Services, OptimalJ automatically generates the Session Bean code needed to invoke the foreign Web Service, based on the imported WSDL file. Organizations pursuing a Web Services strategy can realize the benefits of Web Services faster and at a lower cost by using OptimalJ.

OptimalJ 2.2 also supports Borland’s JBuilder integrated development environment (IDE) in addition to the NetBeans IDE. As a result, companies can leverage their existing JBuilder investment, while benefiting from the power of OptimalJ. Additionally, OptimalJ supports all leading application servers, databases and modeling tools, ensuring that existing technology investments are leveraged.

The ease of incorporating new versions of technology is a large cost factor for organizations when moving applications forward. OptimalJ delivers a pluggable pattern architecture, dramatically reducing the cost of upgrading to new technologies. Using this architecture in OptimalJ 2.2, upgrading an application from EJB 1.1 to EJB 2.0 requires only the installation of the EJB 2.0 pattern.

“OptimalJ 2.2 contains significant new functionality to address the most pressing IT challenges facing organizations in the current economic climate,” said Edwin Schumacher, Director of Product Management for Compuware OptimalJ. “Enterprises want to leverage existing investments by integrating those technologies easily, quickly and cheaply. OptimalJ 2.2 introduces a number of application integration capabilities, including Web Services to achieve this integration and also supports the JBuilder IDE.”
