3/26/2003 - PLX Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLXT), a leading supplier of standard I/O interconnect silicon to the communications, storage, server, and embedded-control industries, announced a co-development effort with Broadcom Corporation on an evaluation platform using the PLX® PowerDriveTM HT7520 HyperTransportTM Tunnel-to-Dual PCI-X Bridge chip. The PowerDrive HT7520 is providing the high-speed HyperTransport interconnect to the Broadcom® SiByteTM BCM91250X daughter card. The daughter card is used with Broadcom's BCM91250E and BCM91125E development boards, which are based on the Broadcom BCM1250 and BCM1125 industry-leading, embedded processors, respectively.
The evaluation platform's BCM91250X is targeted at system designers developing networking, communications, storage, appliance and imaging systems based on Broadcom's SiByte processors and the HyperTransport interconnect. The BCM91250X is available now from Broadcom.
Evaluation boards provide a development platform for system designers and are used to test and debug components and develop software for system-level products. This allows designers to ensure their system is operating properly prior to investing in the development of their own production boards.
PLX and Broadcom are leveraging their respective input/output (I/O) interconnect and communications expertise in developing the evaluation platform and its support software. The evaluation platform provides an option for high-speed interconnection to a host system via the HT7520's HyperTransport link transmitting 16-bit data at 600MHz Double Data Rate (DDR) for up to 4.8 GB/s bandwidth.
"PLX and Broadcom both have a great deal of experience in development platforms used in the computing and communications markets," said Michael Sarpa, Marketing Manager at PLX. "This co-development effort blends PLX's interconnect expertise with Broadcom's processor expertise to provide system designers the high-performance combination of the SiByte processor and PowerDrive HT7520."
"This new processor evaluation platform brings together the processing muscle of Broadcom's SiByte line and the unprecedented HyperTransport speed of the PowerDrive HT7520 device," said Krishna Anne, Strategic Marketing Manager in Broadcom's Broadband Processor Business Unit. "With this platform, we're providing system designers and manufacturers with a powerful tool with which to take advantage of advanced processor performance using HyperTransport technology."
Offering an 800 MHz DDR link speed, which is the highest-performance link available for current HyperTransport embedded applications, the PowerDrive HT7520 chip is designed to deliver unsurpassed bandwidth to other HyperTransport technology devices, such as network, graphics and security processors. The front-end HyperTransport interface enables a configurable 16-bit wide communication path to the system host. At 800 MHz, this front-end interface delivers the highest bandwidth available in its class at 6.4 GB/s. The back-end HyperTransport interface offers a configurable 8-bit wide communication path to a downstream device, offering up to 3.2 GB/s of bandwidth. The PowerDrive HT7520's high speed and bandwidth capacity eliminates I/O bottlenecks, the main performance limitation in switches, routers, and storage servers.
Broadcom's SiByte family is a new generation of high-performance, low-power, highly integrated processor solutions for the networking, communications, wireless infrastructure, and network storage markets. The BCM91250E and BCM91125E PCI evaluation board platforms for the SiByte family are complete development packages with firmware, operating systems software, and development tools. Each board makes use of all the interfaces on the corresponding processor, and can be used with any PCI-compliant chassis. The BCM91250X daughter card with the PowerDrive HT7520 can be plugged directly into either of the processor cards, providing the additional HyperTransport tunnel and the dual PCI-X connections.
