Adaptec Links Desktops to Serial ATA Drives with New RAID Products

3/20/2003 - Adaptec, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADPT), the global leader in data storage access solutions, announced a broad Serial ATA (SATA) product family including motherboard solutions and zero-channel, 2-, 4-, 8-, 12- and 16-port add-in RAID cards that deliver Adaptec's proven data protection technology combined with SATA price-per-megabyte performance for desktop PCs, workstations, entry-level and midrange servers and external storage appliances.

The new SATA RAID product line builds on Adaptec's industry leadership in RAID data protection. According to 2002 tracking data from The NPD Group, Adaptec leads the industry in sales of SCSI RAID controllers through U.S. distribution with 82 percent market share. Adaptec is working with major disk drive makers, resellers and original equipment manufacturers to drive Serial ATA adoption.

"Small and midsize businesses need more cost-effective storage solutions that can also ensure their data is always available and protected," said Ahmet Houssein, vice president and general manager of Adaptec's Storage Solutions group."Adaptec is delivering its proven RAID technology at a low Serial ATA price point.

By leveraging Adaptec's robust OEM relationships and channel leadership, we will be able to deliver enterprise-class RAID capabilities to mid-market customers."

The low per-megabyte cost of SATA drives makes them cost-effective for mid-market servers and workstations as well as disk-based backup applications. Adaptec's broad SATA product family includes add-in RAID cards to enhance system performance and uptime. The controllers enable the use of longer, thinner cables and smaller connectors than parallel technology to improve chassis airflow and cooling, simplify cable routing and allow system builders to design smaller form factors.

Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA
The Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA, introduced today, is a 2-port card that brings low-cost RAID and up to 1.5 Gigabit-per-second performance to home PCs, workstations and sub-entry servers. The 1210SA features Adaptec's HostRAIDTM, the same mirroring and striping technology embedded in Adaptec's industry-leading Ultra320 SCSI controllers. Future Adaptec Serial ATA RAID controllers will add RAID 5 and 10 for advanced workstation, server and storage appliance data protection.

For home PCs, the 1210SA's striping enhances performance of bandwidth-intensive applications such as video and audio streaming, while its mirroring capability provides disk backup to protect personal finance and other important data.

To simplify storage management and reduce related costs, Adaptec's Serial ATA RAID controllers operate under the same browser-based management software as its SCSI RAID cards. The intuitive RAID management tool allows end users to remotely monitor and configure RAID subsystems through convenient password-protected web access.

Adaptec SATAConnect
Adaptec also introduced today the availability of SATAConnect, a 2-port controller with transfer speeds of up to 1.5 Gigabits per second for desktop PCs. SATAConnect provides consumers with a cost-effective, easy-to-install connection to high-performance hard drives to enhance access to data- and bandwidth-intensive applications, such as video, audio, games and other multimedia.

Adaptec Serial ATA RAID First Choice of Resellers
Adaptec is leveraging its channel leadership in RAID to bring low-cost Serial ATA connectivity with data protection to resellers.

"Adaptec's Serial ATA RAID controllers bring Adaptec's considerable SCSI RAID expertise to the SATA market," said Sam Flory, lead R&G engineer with Rackable Systems."Adaptec's Serial ATA RAID controllers will allow us to deliver an even wider range of price/performance data protection options."

"Data protection is vital to our customers because they use massive amounts of stored data that is crucial to their business," said Matthew Jordan, a system integrator with Megahaus."Many of our customers use RAID 0 and 1 because it's fast, so Adaptec's HostRAID technology perfectly meets their needs."

Availability and Pricing
The Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA will begin shipping to resellers and major distributors later this month at a manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP) of $75.

Adaptec SATAConnect will be available on May 1st at retail stores including Fry's, CompUSA and MicroCenter, as well as the Adaptec Web site at at a MSRP of $49.99.
