Ningbo Bird Launches Chinese Mobile Handsets Powered by Broadcom

3/19/2003 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), the leading provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, announced a strategic partnership with Ningbo Bird, the largest local supplier of cellular phone handsets in China. The partnership with Ningbo Bird, which is based in Ningbo (Zhejiang province), China, encompasses the development of multimedia GSM/GPRS handsets for sales into China and abroad.

Broadcom also announced that Ningbo Bird has recently moved the new V09 GSM handset into production, targeted at China’s domestic market, and will be introducing a range of new multimedia GSM/GPRS clamshell handsets based on Broadcom reference technology. These handsets are based on the Broadcom® ML2011 GSM baseband processor and BCM2121 GPRS baseband processor. Broadcom’s Mobile Communications Business Unit (formerly Mobilink Telecom) and Ningbo Bird have been collaborating for some time. Broadcom recently established a new R&D facility in Shanghai, China, to support Ningbo Bird locally.

Ningbo Bird is now the leading local supplier of handsets in China and has grown rapidly to produce over seven million handsets in 2002. Ningbo Bird plans to introduce two models per month in 2003 and is poised to become one of China's top three domestic brands, with plans to expand into foreign markets in other parts of Asia.

“Broadcom was able to bring us a complete solution with quality, advanced features, small size and a competitive bill-of-materials in less than seven months,” said Mr. Xiguang Xu, Ningbo Bird’s Co-founder and Vice General Manager. “We are very pleased with the support received from Broadcom and impressed with their GSM/GPRS/EDGE technology road map. We have plans for a number of new phones based on Broadcom technology.”

“Bird’s growth in sales in the tough China market is a testament to the quality of their marketing and engineering teams,” said Dr. Leo Li, Senior Director of Broadcom’s Mobile Communications Business Unit. “We hope to help propel Bird to even higher rankings in the cellular marketplace.”

Broadcom is already working on several new GSM and GPRS clamshell phones with Ningbo Bird, including versions with color displays, Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) support, as well as embedded cameras. These new phones will be introduced in China and other overseas markets.

Broadcom’s cellular handset platform includes a full reference design, protocol stack and software Man-Machine Interface (MMI). Engineering support is also given in the type approval and carrier approval processes to assist the product in an early market launch. Support also extends into manufacturing, with the supply of all calibration software and test support to ensure good manufacturing yield.

“Broadcom’s turn-key solution support is unique in that we offer true end-to-end support for our customers, ensuring the opportunity for a successful and profitable outcome,” Li added.

Ningbo Bird is using Broadcom’s ML2011 Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) baseband and BCM2121 General Packet Radio System (GPRS) baseband, which are single-chip solutions with fully integrated mixed-signal and digital elements on the same die.
