Radicati Group Recognizes Sun for Lowest Costs per User

3/18/2003 - Sun Microsystems Inc., a leader in systems and solutions that make the Net work, was recognized by the Radicati Group as a leader in providing low-cost enterprise communications and collaboration solutions, delivering a 2 to 1 total cost of ownership (TCO) advantage over Microsoft and IBM enterprise communications solutions. According to the Radicati Group's latest TCO report on real-world enterprise deployments ("Messaging Total Cost of Ownership 2003," March 2003) announced, Sun(tm) ONE communications and collaboration products delivered a three-year Average Loaded and Collaboration TCO of $214/user versus $407/user for IBM Lotus and $439/user Microsoft Exchange. The Sun ONE Communications platform was also recognized by the Radicati Group as the lowest TCO solution in the service provider market with an average annual TCO of only $2.50/user. With these results, Sun is the only vendor in the Radicati Group research study to show TCO leadership across both the Enterprise and Service Provider markets.

Sun ONE communications and collaboration products include Sun ONE Messaging Server software, the leading messaging server software with more than 220 million mailboxes sold, Sun ONE Calendar Server software, the leading calendar server software with more than 100 million seats sold, and a leading instant collaboration solution. Sun ONE communications and collaboration solutions are supported by a number of development partners and deployed by major enterprises including the health, retail and service provider industries.

Sun led the Radicati Group's "Messaging Total Cost of Ownership 2003" study in the following areas:

"IT organizations are increasingly seeking to act as internal service providers to their organization and service providers are seeking to add enterprise collaboration services such as calendaring and instant messaging for their end customers," said Patrick Dorsey, group manager, Sun ONE Communication Products, Sun Microsystems. "The Sun ONE communications platform delivers a compelling TCO advantage for both service provider and enterprise customers looking to deliver open standards based, highly reliable, scalable, and secure communications services at significantly lower total cost of ownership than existing departmental focused platforms."

With over 1000 customer deployments, Sun ONE communications and collaboration products can provide a robust and flexible platform meeting the diverse communications needs of all types of organizations, including carrier-grade scalability, military-grade security and enterprise-ready communications and collaboration features. Deployments of Sun ONE communications and collaboration products range from tens of thousands to millions of users, across government agencies, educational institutions, enterprises, and service providers.

"The importance of communications and collaboration solutions in the business world is growing exponentially," said Dr. Sara Radicati, President & CEO of the Radicati Group. "Our research shows that Sun is continuing to demonstrate a leadership position in both the enterprise and service provider space by enabling the efficient delivery of communication services to a large number of users while driving down ownership costs."

The Radicati study is the latest proof-point of Sun's leadership and deep history of providing communications and collaboration solutions. The Sun ONE Messaging Server was positioned in the leader quadrant within Gartner's Messaging Servers Magic Quadrant ("Magic Quadrant for Messaging Servers," October 2002). Gartner's Magic Quadrant maps Gartner's assessment of the vendor's 'Vision' against its 'Ability to Execute that vision'. Sun is positioned in the top right Leader quadrant. According to Gartner, Leaders are vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.
