3/18/2003 - Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq:SNPS), the world leader in integrated circuit (IC) design software, announced an agreement with the High Technology Research and Development Center (HTRDC) of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) to donate IC design tools to the center. The agreement also includes the purchase of additional Synopsys tools by MOST.
Synopsys tools will be used to support the construction of IC design incubators in seven regions where major IC design industry development is occurring, including Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuxi and Shenzhen. The agreement delivers tools used by advanced IC designers to address full system-on-chip (SoC) and ASIC design flows, including implementation, verification and intellectual property. Industry-leading tools from Synopsys' GalaxyTM Design and verification platforms include VCSTM, DC UltraTM, HDL CompilerTM, Design Vision, DFT CompilerTM, TetraMax®, PrimeTime®, ApolloTM, CosmosTM, HerculesTM, NanoSimTM, LEDA®, Vera®, SciroccoTM, Star-HspiceTM, Star-RCXTTM, and DesignWare®.
"MOST's goal is to foster the growth of IC design companies and the IC design industry in China by providing an environment that aids small start-ups and encourages the ongoing development of design talent and innovative ideas within China," said Mr. Jichun Feng, director of the High Technology Research and Development Center of MOST. "The agreement with Synopsys demonstrates the great progress we are making to accelerate the development of incubators in China's key centers of IC design."
Since early 2000, MOST has organized and implemented a project for complex IC design through its High Technology Research and Development Center and the "863" IC Expert Group. The core of the project is an incubator program for IC design companies. Under the agreement with Synopsys, the HTRDC and the "863" IC Expert Group agreed to endorse and standardize an IC design flow based on the licensed Synopsys tool set. Companies participating in the incubator program can use the Synopsys design flow to develop and implement designs for China's burgeoning IC market.
Since 1995, Synopsys has been helping to accelerate the growth of the China IC design industry with its long-standing commitment to the region. "China's IC design workforce is making a concerted effort to develop expertise in key areas such as deep submicron SoC design," said Chi-Foon Chan, president and chief operating officer at Synopsys, Inc. "By building strong relationships with technology leaders, China will help create a more optimal IC design infrastructure."
About The High Technology Research and Development Center of The Ministry of Science and Technology, Peoples' Republic of China
The High-Tech Research and Development Center (HTRDC) operates under the Ministry of Science and Technology in the Peoples' Republic of China. Founded in 1994, the HTRDC has been approved by the Central Organization Committee of China. HTRDC undertakes various functions and responsibilities, including promoting international cooperation, researching various issues concerned with the industrialization of high and new technology, and developing strategy and policy for the research of high technology. HTRDC handles project management, administration, statistical analysis and technology transfer for the "863" program. HTRDC also provides consultation and services for the core operations of MOST with respect to legal and intellectual property rights affairs.
Synopsys Galaxy Design Platform
The Galaxy Design Platform integrates Synopsys' industry-leading IC implementation tools and intellectual property (IP), including Design Compiler®, DFT Compiler, Power Compiler, DesignWare, Floorplan Compiler, Physical Compiler®, AstroTM, PrimeTime, TetraMAX, Star-RCXT, Hercules and ProteusTM. Galaxy Design Platform incorporates consistent timing, common libraries, delay calculation and constraints from RTL all the way to silicon using the production-proven MilkywayTM database. In addition, Galaxy offers designers the flexibility to integrate internally developed and third-party tools through the open APIs within the Milkyway design database. Synopsys Galaxy Design Platform integration is currently in limited customer availability. General availability will begin in June 2003.
