3/18/2003 - Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR) extended its WAN performance analysis capabilities in support of the ATM environment, helping reduce high network infrastructure costs. This offering expands Compuware’s Vantage application performance management suite by introducing ATM WAN management for multimode OC-3/STM-1 links. NetworkVantage, the suite’s network application traffic analysis tool, now enables network engineers and managers to monitor and report on ATM traffic.
“Compuware’s NetworkVantage tool enables us to see traffic on our ATM WAN backbone for the first time, such as Citrix,” said Stephen Revel, WAN Engineer, New Zealand Milk Producers (NZMP), Fonterra Cooperative Group. “We now benefit from better planning and upgrades, smoother application rollouts, and better use of WAN capability. Performance problems can be pinpointed, and we can better plan for the future. It is far better to be proactive than reactive.” As the world's largest dairy ingredients organization, NZMP markets products in 100 countries, operating a network of offices covering every continent except Antarctica.
“IT shops are under pressure to contain costs and squeeze the maximum ROI out of existing infrastructures,” said Jeffrey Nudler, a senior analyst at Enterprise Management Associates. “Organizations that can increase their visibility into how the WAN is being used, especially ATM links, will be able to optimize their IT budget dollars.”
The ability of NetworkVantage to manage ATM WAN usage enables IT professionals to better budget WAN costs and more easily determine if this network resource is being used to the organization’s maximum benefit. With one of the deepest application discovery and drill down capabilities commercially available, NetworkVantage enables network administrators to determine if the WAN is being consumed by low-priority or non-business applications and identify who is generating that traffic. NetworkVantage will also show what links are over-subscribed. Network engineers can use this insight to make informed decisions regarding WAN operating expenses and traffic balancing.
Specific ATM WAN support includes reporting of traffic volumes by access circuit, as well as traffic volume, throughput and utilization by virtual circuit. Users may configure the virtual circuit reports to represent all applications or a selected application. Reports also include traffic breakdown by protocol or by application conversation, server, workstation and response-time statistics.
“The addition of ATM WAN support strengthens the value of NetworkVantage by managing a broader set of critical IT infrastructure,” said Lloyd Bloom, NetworkVantage Product Manager, Compuware. “The ATM support delivers critical usage and performance information about one of IT’s most costly operating budget items, bringing economic benefit to the entire organization while making network engineers’ lives easier with the ability to manage performance across ATM links.”
Availability and Pricing NetworkVantage support for ATM WAN is available immediately with prices beginning at $19,000 (U.S.).
