3/18/2003 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), the leading provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, announced its new low-power, small footprint Internet Protocol security (IPsec) processor that provides manufacturers with security processing at speeds up to 80 Mbps (Megabits per second). The Broadcom® BCM5812 CryptoNetXTM IPsec Processor is designed to eliminate virtual private networking (VPN) bottlenecks and degradation across the entire network infrastructure for such equipment as residential gateways, firewalls, and SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) routers and switches.
VPNs allow two or more private networks to be connected over a publicly accessed network, such as the Internet, while eliminating the high costs associated with private leased lines. By utilizing crypto technology, such as the new BCM5812, VPNs are afforded the same security and encryption capabilities as a private network, while taking full advantage of the cost savings and remote accessibility that public networks provide.
VPNs are quickly replacing expensive, dedicated networks for remote access to corporate Intranets and business-to-business transactions.
The BCM5812 is an ideal single-chip, low-cost security solution for embedded systems and add-in modules. The new chip features built-in PCI and support for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
“With the addition of the BCM5812 to our CryptoNetX product family, we have expanded our AES-enabled PCI-based product offerings to address the low-end, cost-sensitive, 50 Mbps performance requirements,” said Ford Tamer, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom’s Switching and Security Business Unit. “Our product family now covers multiple performance points that allow our customers to best match their security and performance requirements with Broadcom’s cost-optimal solutions.”
The BCM5812 is the newest member of Broadcom’s successful CryptoNetX family and is targeted for embedded applications that require reductions in board space, power consumption and cost. The device includes an extensive embedded software development kit that is compatible with other Broadcom CryptoNetX devices (i.e. BCM5802, BCM5805, BCM5820, BCM5821 and BCM5823). This compatibility enables customers to easily add the BCM5812 to current network designs and allows them to build a portfolio of Broadcom security solutions based on their existing software platform.
The BCM5812 supports 256-bit key AES, the most recent U.S. Government-approved encryption algorithm for IPsec-based equipment. Support for 256-bit key AES, at speeds up to 80 Mbps, provides much stronger IP security at the low-end for embedded firewalls, VPN appliances, VPN-enabled routers and access devices, securing confidential e-Commerce transactions and data transfers over the Internet.
Featured within the BCM5812 is an easy-to-use PCI 2.2 interface. Through this PCI capability, the BCM5812 interfaces directly to the PCI bus with no need for additional interface logic, external components or external memory and supports all of the algorithms needed for the IPsec, SSL (Secure Socket Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocols.
The BCM5812 provides bulk cryptographic acceleration for industry supported symmetric encryption algorithms, hash algorithms, and keyed authentication algorithms. The new device also supports IPsec bulk payload processing for all AES modes and provides public key acceleration as well as basic Modular Math functions. The chip also provides a true random number generator that can be used to generate on-chip random values for Diffie-Hellman key generation and DSA signatures.
The BCM5812 CryptoNetX IP Security Processor is sampling today, with production quantities expected to be available in the second quarter of 2003. The chip is packaged in a small 15mm x 15mm FBGA design utilizing 0.18-micron CMOS process technology that yields a power consumption less than 0.5 Watts.
