Ampro's PowerPC-based EnCore PP1 Module Certified for VxWorks

3/10/2003 - Ampro Computers, Inc., the inventor and leading supplier of CPU modules and single board computers for non-back-plane embedded systems, announced that Wind River Systems, Inc. has certified its VxWorks® 5.5 real-time operating system (RTOS) for use with Ampro's PowerPC -based EnCore PP1 module. The EnCore PP1 features Motorola's 300MHz MPC8245 integrated host processor with a fast 66MHz PCI bus interface, SDRAM memory and additional I/O on a small form-factor circuit board assembly. Achieving certification is the strongest indication of this popular operating system running properly on commercial hardware. Ampro customers in medical, military & aerospace/defense, industrial control, transportation, and instrumentation market segments save valuable time and get new products to market faster by using reliable hardware and software which are tested extensively together.

"Bringing up an operating system on new hardware continues to be one of the highest risk elements in the deployment of a new embedded application," said Joanne Williams, president and CEO of Ampro. "The considerable value design engineers gain from our investment to supply VxWorks Board Support Packages for our boards has been further enhanced by Wind River's certification of Ampro's software. Design engineers at system OEMs can now embrace our combined hardware / software solutions with even greater confidence in the completeness and quality of the software provided."

"Wind River recognizes the importance of Tornado Certification to our customers, so we award certification to our partners' product that pass our extensive quality assurance and integration tests," said David Scheaffer, senior director of the Alliance Group, Wind River. "Using integrated and tested hardware and software from companies such as Ampro with a long history of embedded experience gives considerable advantage to system companies in their time-critical, competitive market segments."

The EnCore PP1 is an embedded processor module featuring Motorola's 300MHz MPS8245 integrated host processor with a 32-bit 66MHz PCI bus interface, 10/100BaseT Ethernet, EIDE, serial, parallel, and USB ports, as well as Motorola COP (JTAG) connection for hardware-assisted debugging. To speed initial development, the EnCore PP1 comes in a QuickStart Kit with RAM and reference baseboard which uses standard connectors for easy attachment of peripherals. The kit includes the certified Tornado 2.2 board support package (BSP) for VxWorks 5.5 along with Ampro's Monitor / Bootloader. Both are distributed in source and object formats on CD-ROM. Details about Ampro's certified Tornado 2.2 BSP, including the extensive I/O support can be found on Wind River's new BSP web page; please visit

Ampro's EnCore PP1 QuickStart Kit sells for $995 and is available from stock. See details at
